The 2018-19 music season on Maui begins with a blockbuster all-Beethoven concert presented by the Maui Chamber Orchestra.
Guest pianist Jacopo Giacopuzzi of Verona, Italy, and Santa Barbara, Calif., turns his formidable skills to the Piano Concerto No. 5 (Op. 73) -- the so-called "Emperor" -- which proved to be the culmination and termination of Beethoven's heroic phase.
For contrast, MCO, under the direction of Robert E. Wills, opens the concert with the Overture from Eggmont (Opus 84) and a set of incidental music written for Goethe's 1787 play of the same name. MCO then embraces Beethoven's sunny and cheerful (and too rarely heard) Symphony No. 4.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Prior to the Sunday show, ticket holders are invited to a free pre-show talk story with the artists.

Tickets are now available for Ebb & Flow Arts exciting 20th season. Encompassing seven concerts on three islands, the shows will present 14 Hawaii premieres and five world premieres.
The new season begins with a 7:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Makawao Union Church.
Thor Johannessen, a guitarist from Iceland, presents works by Astor Piazzolla, William Anderson, Enrique Granados and others.

Maui Pops Orchestra has announced its shows for the new season and tickets are on sale now.
"Holiday Pops" rings out 2018 at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater in Kahului with featured guest Henry Kapono. Under the baton of Music Director James Durham, the 50-plus member orchestra will entertain with Kapono's most loved songs, as well as many holiday favorites.
"Broadway Pops" brings in the new year at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13 featuring vocalists Scarlett Strallen and Hugh Panaro. This annual sell-out concert features songs from "My Fair Lady," "The Wizard of Oz," "Ice Castles," "Phantom of the Opera" and more.
"Winter Pops" features the amazing versatility of the violin with award-winning conductor and violinist Lawrence Golan. Featured music includes selections from "Fiddler on the Roof," "Schindler's List," "The Lord of the Dance," "Carmen" and selections by Leroy Anderson and Charlie Daniels.
"Spring Pops" closes out the season featuring Tony Award-winner Debbie Gravitte and entertainer Sal Viviano who join forces to thrill and delight with "The Sweet Sounds of Big Band." Selections include music by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Paul Anka, Ray Charles, Glenn Miller and more.
Tickets are $22, $35, $50 and $60 (plus applicable fees). Students aged 18 years and younger are half-price for the $35 – $60 seats. Get a 10 percent discount on tickets when you purchase all four concerts by Dec. 2.
