1943 -- An even dozen Mauians will be inducted into the U.S. Army at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 4 for service as interpreters and translators of Japanese with armed forces in the Pacific fighting zones.

1968 -- Haleakala Dairy Inc. officials said Monday that the Christmas party they staged in the MIMS building of Kahului Shopping Center last Saturday was a "tremendous success." Wives of 25 of the dairy's employees assisted the party's general chairman, Charles Nalepa, in accommodating the more than 1,300 youngsters and parents.

1993 -- Bullock's of Hawaii in Pukalani will be closing at the end of the year after 26 years in business, owners Hazel and Paul Elkins announced. The home of the Moonburger has been more like a family kitchen than a restaurant for many of its regular patrons.
