Creative Lab Hawaii offers free immersive weekend programs

Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism's Creative Industries Division has unveiled its 2019 Creative Lab Hawaii Immersive and Weekend Ideation Program: From Shorts to Long Form Content -- A Program for Indigenous Storytelling, designed for screenwriters, motion picture producers and web series developers.
Scheduled for June 1 and 2 at the Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach at 2490 Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu, this weekend experience will focus on cultivating opportunities for indigenous storytelling on global platforms and includes three months of followup mentorship.
"We're always looking for new ways to celebrate and accelerate opportunities for Hawaii's unique voices," said Georja Skinner, division chief DBEDT's Creative Industries Division and founder of CLH. "CLH programs offer participants an understanding of the avenues, tools and access to industry connections needed to better navigate the entertainment industry and the use of new platforms to share their stories."
CLH was launched in 2012 to develop a system designed to increase export, attract investment and build the state's creative entrepreneurial capacity in media, music and fashion/design. The workshops are designed for entrepreneurs in early-stage project development with the goal of building the pre-requisite requirements for CLH Immersive Programs and other relevant arrangements.
"Among the benefits of Creative Lab are the one-on-one professional mentorships and overnight connection to hundreds of other artists and entrepreneurs," explains Mauian Brian Kohne, award-winning music producer and independent motion picture writer/director/producer. "It serves as a profound example of exciting educational opportunities the State of Hawaii is striving to provide island creatives as we build the industry.
"At UH Maui College, for example, we recently established a robust two-year Creative Media associate of science degree which provides specializations in filmmaking and communication design. Our most recent Made-on-Maui feature film, 'Kuleana,' soon opens in select mainland theaters (under the alternate title 'Maui'), and was a direct beneficiary of Creative Lab through my participation in the Writers Intensive. The work with Michael [Palmieri, executive director of CLH], our mentors and with eight highly talented co-horts, elevated the quality of our script to higher heights prior to production, and their continued support is immeasurable as we advance further into international distribution."
The free CLH Ideation Weekend workshop caters to creative entrepreneurs who are looking to explore ways in which they can execute a story they're committed to telling. Those who have a written idea, concept, or fully developed short -- and are interested in taking the next step to create a plan for their project -- can learn strategies to maximize their time, creative and financial resources. In addition to the two-day workshop, participants will benefit from the guidance and support of a three-month coaching program.
In order to attend the CLH workshop, interested parties must attend an online information session from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27. Advance registration is required by emailing Palmieri at creativelab808@gmail.com no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 26. Upon confirmation of registration, an online link will be provided to access the info session.
The deadline to apply to the CLH Weekend Ideation Program is Sunday, March 31.
