Sistah Robi Kahakalau performs free benefit at the Shops at Wailea

3 min read

The Shops at Wailea welcomes Grammy-nominated, pioneering female Hawaiian reggae artist Sistah Robi Kahakalau to Concerts at The Shops with a free performance from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, to benefit Hospice Maui.

Recognized as one of Hawaii's most popular female vocalists, renowned for her distinctive voice and creative energy, Sistah Robi's diverse background is brought to life through her music, which ranges from soft Hawaiian rhythms and funky reggae beats to American pop songs and Polynesian traditionals.

Robi burst onto the Hawaii music scene in 1990, when she joined the Hawaiian Style Band singing lead on two highly acclaimed albums, "Vanishing Treasures" and "Rhythm of the Ocean." Her solo career began in 1995 with the debut of Sistah Robi, and she has since released four solo albums, has been honored with three Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, as well as a Grammy Award nomination.

In a continued effort to give back to the community, The Shops at Wailea supports a different Maui non-profit each month with 60 percent of the special event parking fees going to the selected charity. The nonprofit recipient for the month of May, Hospice Maui, has served the diverse community of Maui with quality, compassionate hospice care for 35 years. Unlike other forms of care that focus only on the patient's physical needs, Hospice Maui also provides emotional and spiritual support for the patient and loved ones, as well as bereavement support for an entire year.

The Shops' special events are designed to enrich the community through exploration and discovery in the arts and music, while supporting local businesses and nonprofit partners. The four-hour special event parking voucher is available for $5 and can be purchased at the nonprofit's parking table.

BALDWIN HIGH’S 'VARIETY SHOW EXTRAVAGANZA' RESCHEDULED OPENING

For anyone who didn't see the correction in Friday's The Maui News, Thursday's Maui Scene's Back Stage column had erroneous dates reported for Baldwin High Performing Arts Learning Center and Baldwin Theatre Guild's 14th annual Variety Show Extravaganza opening.

The show is scheduled to run at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12 and Monday, May 13.

This one-of-a-kind original show features singing, dancing and skits created by students of the program. You may see a twist on a favorite commercial, Broadway theater numbers, hula and audience participation skits. Every year it's something new.

In addition to the show, there is a "Gala Night Dessert / Silent Auction Fundraiser" set at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Starlight Cafe, located next to Loudon Mini-Theatre on the H.P. Baldwin High School campus in Wailuku.

Tickets for the show are $5 general admission and are available 45 minutes prior to showtime. Tickets for the fundraiser are $15 for adult, $13 for senior citizens and teachers, $12 for students aged 11 to 17 and $10 for children aged 10 and younger. Fundraiser tickets include admittance to the show. Reservations are required for the fundraiser and may be made by calling 727-3297.

Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Baldwin Thespians trip to the Thespian Conference in Nebraska in June.
