STAND-UP AND YOUTUBE STAR HAPPYSLIP MAKES MAUI PREMIERE
YouTube pioneer, Christine Gambito, better known as HappySlip, makes her Maui premiere with her family-friendly stand-up comedy tour for two appearances. She will perform a preview of her show "HappySlip LIVE!" at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at the 50th Barrio Fiesta at Binhi At Ani Community Center, 780 Onehee Ave. in Kahului. Gambito will present the full show at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku.
This mother of four, born in Virginia Beach, Va., started performing comedy at a young age when her mom would request her to do impressions of the family -- cousins were asked to play piano; she was asked to do stand-up.
"The HappySlip YouTube channel was the first channel of its kind back in 2006 where it was a one-woman show," explained Gambito. "I was writing, performing in, filming and editing the skits by myself.
"My particular audience relates to the observational comedy that arises from growing up in a Filipino household but having to face an American world. Not that you have to be Filipino to relate to the content though, because it really is based on the culture clash that occurs within any immigrant family.
"Now after 100 million views across the internet, I am bringing the comedy back to where it started and that is actually in the form of stand up comedy!" continued Gambito.
"Comments on videos and interaction on social media are nice but there's nothing like a live performance and getting to interact with the audience face to face. The energy is amazing in a room where whole families are gathered and laughing at similar and shared experiences."
Tickets for "HappySlip LIVE!" are $20 (plus $2.50 box office fee)
