1919 -- Every woman on the island of Maui who can get there is urged to attend the monster suffrage meeting which is to be held tomorrow at two o'clock at the Kahului community house.

1944 -- Playing with a hand grenade ended tragically when two Halehaku schoolchildren were critically injured and 10 others were casualties as their "plaything" exploded among a group of children returning from school near Peahi.

50 Years Ago

1969 -- Dr. Milton Howell -- who has served as Hana's only physician since 1962 -- has been named "Hawaii's Physician of the Year."

25 Years Ago

1994 -- A sweepstakes is the latest fundraising effort by those working to make beachfront property owned by Makena Beach Investors part of the Makena-La Perouse State Park.

2009 -- Every year about this time, Civil Defense, the Red Cross and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center begin trying to convince skeptical Maui residents to prepare for a possible hurricane. The convincing is much easier on Kauai and in parts of Oahu smashed by Iniki in 1992.
