Maui printmaker exhibits at Lo‘i Gallery on Oahu

Maui printmaker Abigail Romanchak is one of several artists in gallery at the Lo'i Gallery located in the new campus branch of American Savings Bank at 300 N. Beretania St. at the corner of 'A'ala St. in Honolulu -- the first new office building in downtown Honolulu in nearly 25 years. Her work will remain on display 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through the end of July.
Romanchak received a bachelor's and master's of fine arts in printmaking from University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has held teaching positions at The Contemporary Museum, The Honolulu Museum of Art and Punahou School on Oahu, as well as at Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center on Maui.
In 2007, she returned home to Maui to assist master printmaker Paul Mullowney at Hui Press.
Romanchak sees her prints as a way to empower and assert a Hawaiian sense of identity and culture through art. She believes that native cultures are jeopardized once they stop speaking to people in the present.
As an artist, she seeks to perpetuate Hawaiian culture not through traditional means, but through contemporary ones, so it may endure for generations to come.
Her work on display at Lo'i Gallery is a series of seven prints, wood cut and collograph, entitled "Converge."
Three other artists at Lo'i Gallery include Ka'ili Chun, a Hawaii-based sculptor and installation artist; John DeMello, a third-generation Honolulu resident photographer; and Noe Tanigawa, artist and award-winning arts and culture journalist from Wailupe, Oahu.
Twenty percent of art sales from this gallery will benefit local nonprofit organizations.
