1919 -- K. Nakata and K. Fukuhara, two of the fastest cane loaders from the HC&S plantation, walked off with the hapai-ko contest honors at the Territorial Fair, the team loading 3 tons of cane in 13 minutes 39 seconds.

1944 -- Capt. Audrey Hollenbeck, commanding officer of the WAC detachment in Hawaii, declared that she believed the WACs had proved their worth in the two years of their existence.

1969 -- Maui County's Council has joined the nationwide consumer boycott of California table grapes in an effort to "help restore human dignity and to bring about social justice for California grape farmworkers."

1994 -- Maui Realtor Jeff Ellison and Ka Lima O Maui Executive

Director Jamie Woodburn, on a cross-country bike ride to raise money for Ka Lima, reached their halfway mark this week and are now expected to arrive a week ahead of schedule in Washington, D. C.

2009 -- A plug-in hybrid vehicle driven by Mayor Charmaine Tavares averaged 64 miles a gallon in April during the first month of travel. Tavares is test driving the county-owned converted Toyota Prius to promote cutting back on fossil fuel consumption.
