An evening of music, hula and culture is on tap at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului in celebration of the newly released album, "Kalawai'anui," by five-time Grammy Award nominee and 18-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Amy Hanaiali'i.

Enjoy an intimate look behind the rich stories and personal pasts that inspired her new album during a benefit concert for Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in McCoy Studio Theater.

Those in attendance will learn who Kalawai'anui is, as well as the powerful connection between Hanaiali'i and her ancestors, and their part in putting this album together.

Joining her will be the world-renowned Halau Na Kipu'upu'u from Waimea --a traditional school of Hawaiian culture and dance. Under the direction of Kumu Hula Micah Kamohoali'i, they will present genealogical chants and stories from their Kalawai'anui Kahoali'i family line shared with Amy Hanaiali'i. This striking, ritualistic offering calls upon the power of their ancestors and cherished homelands, taking the audience on an impressive journey through genealogy, history and landscapes.

Melt into the music, become entranced by the dancing and divulge the sacred stories that have been passed down from generation to generation during this fundraiser for Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani -- the first traditional voyaging canoe built on Maui in more than three centuries.

Tickets are $35, $45 and $65 (plus applicable fees), with a preshow meet-and-greet option for an additional fee. To purchase tickets, call 242-7469, visit www.mauiarts.org or head to the box office.
