Labyrinths not uncommon on Valley Isle

2 min read

Among the many engaging features of The Sacred Garden of Maliko in Makawao are two popular labyrinths which offer visitors an opportunity for inner examination.

As stated on The Sacred Garden's website, "you do not walk the labyrinth to learn about the labyrinth -- you walk the labyrinth to learn about yourself."

The seven-circuit labyrinth is the most universal according to www.sacredgardenmaui.com, named so for the seven circuits, or paths, which are ideally suited for walking meditations. In labyrinth-speak, circuits refer to the number of times the path crosses between the center and the outside edge.

Sacred Garden's larger 11-circuit labyrinth is patterned after the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth in France. This medieval labyrinth design features an alteration consisting of an open heart in the center.

An ancient path of metaphorical pilgrimage, labyrinths exist in myriad configurations but most incorporate a single winding path to a center point, which then snakes back outside.

Sacred Garden offers the following suggestions for getting the most out of your labyrinth experience:

Entering: The walk into the labyrinth is an opportunity for deep self-awareness and the letting go of inner obstacles.

In the center: This is the time for silent meditation, contemplation and renewal. Stay in the center as long as needed.

Exiting: On your way back out, begin integrating insights gleaned from your journey to the center into your active consciousness.

Walk the labyrinths at The Sacred Garden of Maliko, 460 Kaluanui Rd. in Makawao, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Donations appreciated. There is also a full moon labyrinth walk offered monthly and a group talk and walk at 3 p.m. Thursdays. RSVP at 573-7700. Visit www.sacredgardenmaui.com for more information.
