1919 -- Aggressive tactics pursued throughout the afternoon of the first game of the inter-Island polo season Sunday procured for Maui the first honors, the game going to them with a score of 22 to 1-1/2.

1944 -- Mrs. Sarah Aulike Kalino Buck, head of the women's and girls' division of the Alexander House Committee Association, yesterday announced her candidacy for a seat in the territorial House of Representatives on the Republican ticket. Mrs. Buck is believed to be the first woman candidate for public office to face the electorate in Maui County.

50 Years Ago

1969 -- Maui County Fair Director Morgan Peris says because of "Operation Facelift," visitors to the fair are in for a pleasant surprise. "The grounds are in great shape, we've put up 1,000 new seats in the stadium, there'll be new parking facilities for several thousand cars and we're painting practically everything in sight."

1994 -- The future of Maunaloa is at a critical juncture. Whether it moves forward offering promise and opportunity or remains mired in uncertainty and doubt hinges on the ability of Molokai Ranch to feasibly redevelop this small West Molokai community.

2009 -- With a pending foreclosure and uncertainty about continued funding for Makena Resort operations, the Maui Prince Resort gave notice to employees that it would terminate its management contract and cease being the hotel and golf course operator as of September 16.
