Check out the third annual La Ulu: Breadfruit Day, a free community event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului) that includes food booths, breadfruit cooking demonstrations, Pacific ulu varieties for sale, Hawaiian plant sale, cultural activities, Hawaiian music, hula and more. For more information, visit www.mnbg.org/laulu.html.

• ONO! (One Night Only) is a free monthly theatrical presentation by Maui OnStage. Catch the Maui Community Band, conducted by Ted Manzano, David Reid and others, perform much-loved classics including "Amazing Grace," "Irish Tune from County Derry," "Second Suite in F" by Gustav Holst and selections from The Beach Boys at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Admission is free. Call 242-6969 for more information.

• Next Friday, ProArts Playhouse opens its season with "Strangers on a Train" starring Jefferson Davis and Geronimo Sun as Guy Haines and Charles Bruno -- two men who have an incidental yet fateful introduction on a train. During this impromptu meeting, Bruno suggests he could kill Guy's unfaithful wife while Guy could eliminate his hated father. Guy does not take him seriously, but Bruno is deadly serious -- and that's all we can disclose at this point.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays from Sept. 13 through 29 at the ProArts Playhouse in Kihei. Tickets are $26.
