100 Years Ago

1919 -- Quite a large crowd of central Maui people drove over to Kihei last Sunday morning to witness the launching of a fine new sampan built by Angus McPhee, which is to be used by him in carrying firewood from Kihei to Lahaina and other points.

75 Years Ago

1944 -- A possibility that the star-studded 7th Army Air Force football team will play the Maui Marines in a War Bond game at the Kahului Fairgrounds on Dec. 9 was revealed Friday.

50 Years Ago

1969 -- The new 30-unit condominium apartment, Puuone Hale Alii, now under construction in Puuone overlooking Kahului Harbor, features prestressed concrete plank floors, the first time this method of construction has been used on Maui.

25 Years Ago

1994 --Despite a lawsuit filed by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to stop the sale of ceded lands for the Villages of Lealii housing project, the state is moving forward and expects the first homes to be completed in the spring.

10 Years Ago

2009 -- Instead of organizing another Maui circle-island torch march this year, a grassroots group is holding sit-down meetings in a dozen districts to talk story with people who know the area as well as to update a Maui map with original place names.
