1919 -- Mrs. Charmian London, wife of the late author and adventurer Jack London, is visiting Maui as the guest of Miss Armine von Tempsky, in Makawao.

1944 -- A new Territorial office building in Wailuku received No.1 priority this week on a list of Territorial post-war building projects for the island. Number 2 priority went to an addition to the Maui County library while the third priority was given to a Board of Health cottage at Hana.

50 Years Ago

1969 -- Release of funds for planning and engineering of two large Maui projects--the J. Walter Cameron Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center and construction of Runway 2-20 at Kahului Airport--were announced this week by Gov. John A. Burns.

25 Years Ago

1994 -- The Sheraton-Maui Hotel is celebrating its last holiday season before closing in mid-January for extensive remodeling. The 32-year-old hotel opened when Lahaina was little more than a sleepy plantation town and Maui's tourism industry was a mere fledgling.

2009 -- A wedge-tailed shearwater bird that was rescued from sharks at Molokini on Thursday had to be euthanized later by state wildlife officials.
