100 Years Ago

1919 -- A light covering of snow on Haleakala was reported by County Agent John Watt, who made the ascent to the summit last Sunday morning in the course of a hunting trip. He also reports snow on both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on Hawaii.

1944 -- The Board of Supervisors, after a debate period devoted chiefly by the Republicans to opposing anything proposed by the Democrats, moved Wednesday to clean up Wailuku's main business district.

50 Years Ago

1969 -- Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho told The Maui News this week that his administration will continue its campaign for "no more bombing of Kahoolawe, period!" A 500-pound bomb found on West Maui pasture land owned by Cravalho and his Maui Factors hui "had fallen from a Navy aircraft sometime in late 1966," the mayor said.

1994 -- The Maui Arts & Cultural Center has met its match, and its name is First Night. It would be hard to imagine a more compatible pairing than the new Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the clean-and-sober New Year's Eve celebration held for the first time on Maui.

2009 -- Mayor Charmaine Tavares joined with other Hawaii mayors in begging state legislators not to take away the counties' share of hotel room tax revenues this year but didn't make any requests for Maui County when she spoke before House and Senate money committees.
