100 Years Ago

1920 -- Another Maui boy has distinguished himself as a soldier in France. Wounded three times and still in a hospital in England, William K. Hussey of Lahaina has recently been decorated by King George for distinguished service and exceptional valor.

75 Years Ago

1945 -- Military authorities on Maui this week renewed their warning to civilians not to handle munitions or explosives they may find. The warning came after the 18th victim of such blasts since the war was injured when a rifle grenade exploded in a Haiku home. The grenade had been found in a gulch near Haiku.

50 Years Ago

1970 -- The development of Wailea -- the "City of Flowers" on Maui's south shore -- is "something Alexander & Baldwin Inc. committed ourselves to and intend to carry out," Frederick K. F. Lee of A&B told some 250 members and guests of the Kahului Business and Professional Association.

25 Years Ago

1995 -- Tenants are running for the exits at Old Kahului Store. Problems for tenants include high rents, high common area maintenance fees and -- a word that comes up frequently -- "inflexible" management. The building is owned by A&B Properties Inc. and has been a center of retail trade for almost 80 years.

10 Years Ago

2010 -- Two years of fundraising by members of the Bantay Association of Maui has helped purchase a much-needed ambulance for their hometown in the Philippines. The association raised $14,000 by, among other things, holding garage sales and selling longanisa, a Filipino sausage.
