1920 — A branch Maui Suffrage Club was formed in Kula, the meeting being held in the Keokea School House. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs. Kapohakimohewa; vice-president, Mrs. Kamakua; secretary, Mrs. Ah Nim; treasurer, Mrs. Copp.

1945 — Antone DaCosta proudly displayed the Japanese sword sent to him by his son, Sgt. Sebastian DaCosta, who single-handedly killed three high-ranking officers of the enemy forces and forced another to surrender in a light skirmish on Saipan. The sword belonged to one of the officers.

1970 — The Valley Island’s pineapple industry has been strengthened as the result of plans announced by Maui Land & Pineapple Company Inc. to acquire certain assets of the business conducted at Pauwela since 1963 by Haserot Pineapple

Company.

1995 — The developers of the proposed Maui Ocean Center aquarium said Tuesday they’re hoping to start construction in October now that they’ve received state permission to tap into the waters of Maalaea Bay.

2010 — Maui finished a “turbulent year” with an occupancy rate of 62.1 percent for 2009. That was down from an already low 67.9 percent in 2008.
