Ocean center running Maui 5K benefit March 1

The Maui Ocean Center will be running the ninth annual Maui 5K on March 1, a fun and healthy fundraiser for fitness programs in Maui County schools.

The event is part of the Maalaea aquarium’s Kuilima program, which gives back to local nonprofit organizations, schools and other community organizations.

The run, in partnership with the nonprofit Run for Fitness, is open to parents, students, athletes and nonathletes.

Proceeds from the run will go to maintain or purchase new equipment for schools’ physical fitness, play and athletic programs.

The Maui 5K begins and ends at the Maui Ocean Center parking lot, where parking is free. Start time is 7 a.m., and there is no time limit to complete the race. At about 8:30 a.m., a post-race celebration will begin with refreshments, awards ceremony, entertainment by DJ Teddy of Your Mix Maui, and a Critter Station hosted by the ocean center.

Registration is currently open with more than 200 participants already signed up as of last week. The Maui 5K features a timed 5K run, untimed 1-mile walk/run and a virtual run option. Strollers are welcomed on the course but must start behind all runners.

The deadline to submit paper applications and be eligible for a T-shirt is today, Saturday. Online registration is open until the day of the race.

Cost ranges from $10 to $35, depending on the run, before race day, when fees increase.

Packet pickup will be available at Adventure Sports Maui, located at 400 Hana Highway.

Run For Fitness aims to provide additional funds for physical education, fitness, play and athletic programs in Maui County schools and youth clubs; increase participation in youth sports and recreation programs; help fight childhood obesity and help children live a happier, more active and healthy lifestyle.

The Maui 5K is currently accepting donations and sponsorships.

Starting at $4.62/week.
