Event to mark birth of Israeli state
An event celebrating Israel’s 65th birthday will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Chapel South Maui at 575 S. Kihei Road, according to an announcement.
The celebration will feature a guest speaker from Israel, authentic Israeli falafel, folk dancing, a hula performance and music.

‘Clean comedian’ to headline event
Calvary Chapel South Maui will hold a fundraiser Saturday, featuring “Maui’s own clean comedian” Riki Roberts, in an effort to send mission teams to Mexico, Nepal and India this year, according to an announcement.
The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the chapel, located at 575 S. Kihei Road. It will feature a silent auction and “delectable desserts,” including an assortment of cakes, pies and “all sorts of deliciousness.”

Discussion group to launch at Ala Lani
Ala Lani United Methodist Church will launch an ecumenical discussion group about spiritually stirring issues for believers.
The group’s first meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, located at 50 S. Papa Ave. in Kahului.
The Rev. Jaeman Lim will lead a discussion on “Jesus of History, Christ of Faith.”

Buddhists to mark birth of founder
West Maui Buddhists will celebrate Sunday the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, in Lumbini Garden, in what is now Nepal, in 563 BC.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, located at 551 Wainee St. The celebration is sponsored by Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, Lahaina Shingon Mission and Lahaina Jodo Mission. George Tanabe, professor emeritus of religion at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will be the keynote speaker.
As part of the celebration, worshippers will pour sweet tea over a representation of the baby Buddha to signify the gentle rain that fell on the day the prince was born.
“Although more than 25 centuries have passed since the Buddha’s birth, his dynamic teachings and benevolent way of life have continued to influence growing numbers of people who are seeking peace for their inner, spiritual selves and are relevant today as ever,” an announcement says.

Speaker to address ‘Testimony of God’
Bishop Isaiah Reed will speak during a free event at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at In His House Restoration Church at 296 Alamaha St. in Kahului.
