Events to celebrate Shavout scheduled
The Jewish Congregation of Maui will host events to celebrate Shavout.
The Festival of Shavuot, also known as the Festival of Weeks, Festival of First Fruits and The Festival of the Giving of the Law will begin with services at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Beit Shalom synagogue.
The festival will begin with the Ma’ariv/evening service. A light Mitzvah meal and a no-time-limit study session will follow the service covering an assortment of topics in the Tanach-Bible, which will be discussed celebrating this anniversary of Moses receiving the Law at Mount Sinai.
On Wednesday, there will be a 10 a.m. Shavuot service. This will be a traditional festival morning service, which will include the reading of the Adkamaut and the Ten Commandments.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, there will be a Shavuot festival service. This will include the chanting of the Book of Ruth as well as a Yizkor memorial service remembering deceased loved ones.
The recommended donation for the Tuesday-night meal is $18. Those planning to attend should call the synagogue office at 874-5397 no later than Monday to reserve a place.

Scholar to discuss Buddhism May 18
A scholar from the University of Leipzing in Germany will be speaking from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission on “Japanese Buddhism in the Global Age” and “Globally Minded Shin Buddhism.”
Ugo Dessi is currently a scholar in residence at the Buddhist Study Center on Oahu, and his free talk is sponsored by the center and the Maui Hongwanji Council.
He studied Buddhism in India and in Germany, where he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Marburg in 2006 with a dissertation on Shin Buddhist ethics. He has been a visiting scholar at Tokyo University, Ryukoku University and a research fellow at Otani University in Japan.
