Northshore Church to hold kids fair

Northshore Church will hold a Community Exchange and kids fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Haiku Elementary School.

For the exchange, attendees get credits for things they bring to the event that they may use to obtain things they need.

The fair will include a bounce house, shave ice, games and more.

The event is free and held the fourth Saturday of each month.

Pastor to speak on leadership

Pastor Jay Pike will teach the “Spiritual Formation of a Leader” from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at Wailuku Door of Faith Church.

This course is part of Door of Faith Church’s extension ministry school that will allow students to obtain an associate degree in theology.

Tuition fee for an associate degree from the Transformation School of Ministry is $150 per quarter; the cost to audit is $50 per quarter.

St. Ann’s Church plans rummage sale

St. Ann’s Church will hold a rummage sale from 7 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds, 40 Kuhinia St. in Wailuku.

Items for sale include clothes, household goods, St. Ann’s bread, baked goods, steak and rice plate lunches, malassadas, pancit, lumpia, fruits and vegetables.

Hope Chapel to address science

Hope Chapel in Kihei will be holding a conference titled “Christianity & Science: Enemies or Allies” from July 19 to 21 at the church.

The free conference will feature Paul Nelson, Discovery Institute and adjunct professor in the master of arts program in science and religion at Biola University; and Pat Zukeran, director of The Pacific Apologetics Center.

On July 19 at 7 p.m., Zukeran will speak on “Why I Believe in God.” Between 9 a.m. and noon July 20, Nelson will speak on “Chopping Down Darwin’s Tree” and “Could Evolution Build the Animals?” and Zukeran will discuss “Three Views of the Age of the Earth.”

On the last day of the conference at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., Nelson’s topic will be “Knowing About God vs. Loving Him.”

The conference is sponsored by the Bible Institute of Hawaii and The Pacific Apologetics Center.

Jews to observe Tisha B’Av

The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Tisha B’Av, the Ninth of Av, from sundown Monday until Tuesday night at the Beit Shalom Synagogue at 634 Alulike St. in Kihei.

The Ma’ariv/evening service, which will include the recitation of Eicha/Lamentations, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. On Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. will be the Shacharit/morning service with a Torah reading. At 6:30 p.m. a Mincha/afternoon service will be held where participants will don tallit and tefillin and again read from the Torah.

Lahaina obon festival Saturday

Lahaina Jodo Mission will celebrate its obon festival Saturday, beginning with a service at 6:30 p.m.

Resident minister the Rev. Gensho Hara will lead the service, which will be followed by a lanterns procession around the Great Buddha on the temple courtyard. The procession will proceed to the beach fronting the temple. The floating lanterns ceremony honors departed souls.

The bon dance will follow in the temple courtyard, accompanied by Maui Taiko, which will offer a special drum performance before the dance.

Food concessions will include roll and cone sushi, chow fun, teriyaki beef plate, nishime, Caesar salad, andagi, shave ice and more. Food booths will open at 6 p.m. There will be games for children.

The mission is at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.

Sculptor to hold free workshop

Charles McCollough, sculptor and theologian, will present a free workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Wailuku Union Church’s Dodge Hall.

The workshop will feature learning and art from McCollough’s most recent book, “The Non-Violent Radical: Seeing and Living the Wisdom of Jesus.” The workshop is open to the public.

McCollough has a doctoral degree in systematic theology and is the author of seven books. He has been artist in residence at five seminaries and is a former policy advocate on the national staff of the United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C.

He has been sculpting for 40 years while pursuing his vocation as a minister, activist, author and teacher. He works in ceramic, bronze, wood and stone and frequently lectures on art, theology and social justice issues.

The event is sponsored by ‘Aha O Na Mokupuni ‘O Maui, Moloka’i Ame Lana’i (the Tri-Isle Association of the United Church of Christ).

Musical Shabbat service tonight

Rabbi Larry Winer of Gan Eden Chavurah will lead a musical Shabbat service at 7:30 tonight at the Lahaina United Methodist Church.

The service will feature cantorial soloist Jodie Girsh, who sings in Hebrew as well as English. The service will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat and social hour.

The church is located at 988 Front St., and free parking is available.
