Kula church to host Halloween event

Waipuna Chapel in Kula is sponsoring an event that organizers call a “safe way to celebrate Halloween” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The price of admission is canned food for donation to the Maui Food Bank.

“Instead of kids going ‘trick or treating’ from house to house, kids go ‘trunk to trunk’ in the Waipuna Chapel parking lot,” the church’s announcement says.

The event will include free food, Halloween-themed games, a glow-in-the-dark tent, candy and prizes.

FireGate Ministries begins Sunday

Grace Church in Pukalani will host FireGate Ministries from Sunday through Wednesday.

The ministry includes Bible-based teaching, apostolic preaching and healing evangelism “all seamlessly woven together with the prophetic,” according to an announcement.

Christmas Gift Fair to be held Nov. 16

Calvary Chapel South Maui is hosting a Christmas Gift Fair from 2 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16.

“The fair will combine a festive shopping experience with a celebration of ‘the reason for the season,'” according to an announcement.

Those who’d like to sell handcrafted items, such as jewelry, or offer onsite services, such as massages, at the fair should sign up by today.

Harvest Party set for Thursday

Pukalani Baptist Church will hold its annual Harvest Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The event includes free dinner, games, prizes, candy, a puppet show, cake walk and a costume parade.

Rummage sale slated for Saturday

Wailuku Union Church will host a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also, roast pork plate lunches can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lunches cost $10 and include roasted pork, gravy, corn, rice and bottled water.

Sales proceeds will benefit the church’s mission grounds development fund.

Community action training to be held

The Hawaii Family Forum will offer “Community Action Network Training” from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 at Apostolic Ministries of the Pacific in Kahului.

Participants can learn about the role of Christians in the public area, be around other people of faith who share the same values and “see how you can plug into the community to make a difference,” according to an announcement.

The event is open to the public. Free educational materials will be provided.

Jodo missions to hold joint service

The annual United Maui Jodo Missions joint service and dharma friends fellowship day will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Wailuku Jodo Mission, 67 Central Ave.

The service will be conducted by the Rev. John Hara, resident minister of Wailuku Jodo Mission. The dharma talk will be given by the Rev. Kosen Ishikawa of Koloa Jodo Mission via the Internet. After the service, a fellowship program and luncheon will be held at the missions hall. Members of Wailuku, Kahului and Lahaina Jodo missions will participate.

Maui residents serving on missions

Several members of the Pukalani Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are serving as missionaries.

Kaumana Rindlisbacher, son of Fred and Francine Rindlisbacher, is serving in the Japan Tokyo South Mission.

Dallin Hee and Mandy Hee are missionaries at the Japan Sapporo Mission and at the St. George Mission in Utah, respectively. Their parents are Aaron and Kathy Hee.

Keone Kapisi and Kelsey Kapisi are serving in the El Salvador Mission in Guatemala and at the New York South Mission, respectively. Joe and Miki Kapisi are their parents.

Kassandra Birch, whose parents are Dr. Douglas and Kristen Birch, is doing missionary work in the Alabama Birmingham Mission.

Rose Kehau Blair is serving in Tipton, Mo. It is her second mission. She previously served in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City.

‘Trunk or Treat’ event Oct. 31

Hope Chapel is sponsoring “Trunk or Treat” for keiki from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the church in Kihei.

The event benefits “Before they are Taken,” a worldwide initiative to help prevent human trafficking and slavery before it begins.

“We believe that our initiative has the potential of stopping more people from going into slavery than any other effort in the world today,” an event announcement says. “We are offering a unique and holistic approach to human traf?cking and slavery prevention.”

The initiative advocates helping communities vulnerable to slavery to become self-sufficient with access to drinking water, food, health care, education and income.

The group is working in Nepal to prevent thousands of women and children from becoming victims of slavery.

The Hope Chapel event provides a safe family environment for trick-or-treaters. In addition to the trunk or treat alley, there will be a bouncy castle and boxcar, pony and hay rides. Other attractions include a petting zoo, food and drink booths, a keiki dance floor and live entertainment.

Community care van set to make a debut

“A Cup of Cold Water, A Community Care Van” will launch its first run following a 9 a.m. service and blessing Oct. 13 at Trinity-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.

The church is at 100 Kulanihakoi St. in Kihei.

A shared dream of Maui’s four Episcopal churches, the van is an “old-fashioned” human needs outreach to serve the community’s poor and needy, according to an announcement. Volunteers on the van will deliver water, basic food, clothing and comfort.

It took nine months to raise startup funding and recruit more than 25 volunteers, according to the announcement. Other pre-launch work included training in homeless outreach, developing an operations plan, creating and stocking a storage and distribution site and acquiring a van.

Initially, the van will make three runs a week to South, Central and West Maui.

The volunteers have been inspired by “the dedication of other faith-based community efforts that have been serving the homeless on Maui for many years.”

Women’s seminar to be held Oct. 12; free

Pukalani Baptist Church will host “Marriage Matters,” a free women’s seminar, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 12.

“Women from various backgrounds will gather to worship Christ Jesus, learn more about him, enjoy his people, and have fun,” according to an announcement.

“All women are invited: single, separated, divorced and married.”

Pukalani Baptist’s Naomi Ashman and Reynelle Murayama will share, along with Valley Isle Fellowship Church’s Wanda-Jeanne Blondo.

Lunch is included.
