Cookie walk, craft fair at St. Theresa

St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church will hold its annual Cookie Walk Bake-off and Craft Fair on Saturday and Sunday in the church hall in Kihei.

Saturday’s event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Sunday’s will be from 8 a.m. to noon.

Proceeds will support the church’s religious education program.

Keawala’i Advent service on Sunday

Keawala’i Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, will hold its annual Advent service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The evening will feature the adult choir, Na Leo Nahenahe, under the direction of Stephen Haines.

A series of anthems and readings will be presented. The anthems will include Pepper Chopin’s “Come Down Emmanuel” and Joel Raney’s “Christmas Is Coming.”

Annual Chanukah Party to be held Dec. 1

The Jewish Congregation of Maui will hold its Annual Community Chanukah Party at Beit Shalom synagogue from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 1.

The evening will feature a candlelighting ceremony, traditional dinner, communal singing, games and prizes. Disc jockey Dan Weisman will provide music and entertainment.

Door prizes and children’s gift bags will be presented, and items from the Judaica Store will be available for purchase.

Chanukah begins at sunset Wednesday. It will be celebrated with Thanksgiving for the first time since 1888.

Thanksgiving Day Mass planned in Kihei

St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kihei will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

Donations of personal hygiene items will be collected for A Cup of Cold Water, the outreach ministry of the Episcopal churches on Maui. Items to be collected include travel-size toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products, rubber slippers and Band-Aids.

Thanksgiving Hoike set for Sunday

Instead of its usual morning service, Wailuku Union Church will have a Thanksgiving Hoike at 4 p.m. Sunday.

People can participate in the worship service by sharing what they are thankful for. A Thanksgiving potluck in Dodge Hall will follow the service.

Church announces Thanksgiving service

The First Church of Christ, Science church will hold a Thanksgiving Day service at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The one-hour service will include the reading of a Bible lesson and time for congregation members to speak about their blessings throughout the year.

Brownridge to speak at Jan. 20 service

The Rev. Walter Brownridge will be the keynote speaker for Faith Action for Community Equity’s upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day Interfaith Service.

The service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 20 at Christ the King Church in Kahului.

Brownridge is dean of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral on Oahu and has decades of experience working for social justice throughout the United States and South Africa, where he served as a canon at St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town and worked closely with Bishop Desmond Tutu, according to an announcement.

The Martin Luther King Day Interfaith Service will celebrate the life of King and his strong commitment to racial and economic justice.

The planning committee chairman of the event, the Rev. Bill Albinger, rector of Holy Innocents Church in Lahaina, expects more than 200 people to attend.

Seniors to be recognized at Nov. 24 event

Christ the King Church will recognize its senior parishioners during a Feast Day event from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 24 in the church hall.

The event will feature entertainment, games, a free blood pressure check, food and drinks.

Free film to be shown Sunday

The Jewish Congregation of Maui will present a free film “Unmasked Judeophobia – the Threat to Civilization” 6 p.m. Sunday at its synagogue located at 634 Alulike St. in Kihei, according to an announcement.

The film is a “meticulous examination of rising anti-Jewish ideology” and a “call to action and urgent reminder that anti-Semitism is a menace not only to Jews, but to the human condition itself,” the announcement says.

While admission is free, donations will be accepted.

Artist to discuss nisei exhibit

Artist Brian Y. Sato will be a featured speaker during Sunday services beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Wailuku Jodo Mission.

Sato is the artist of the award-winning exhibition “Gokurosama Hawaii Nikkei Nisei” showing at the Maui Nisei Veterans Memorial Center. He will talk about his exhibit and the many portraits of nisei (second-generation Japanese-Americans) that he has taken over the years.

Thangkas event to be held Monday

The Venerable Lama Gyaltsen will display various thangkas at Lumeria Maui on Monday and explain the symbolic inner meaning of each element of the sacred art depicted.

The event at 1813 Baldwin Ave. in Makawao will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Maui Dharma Center.

During the event, Gyaltsen “will introduce the basis for the profound methods of Vajrayana meditation using the thangka as a support for visualization,” according to an announcement.

“A thangka is a beautiful form of sacred art usually drawn, painted or printed on canvas or paper encircled by a border of exquisite silk brocade showing an image of a divine being, revealing the intricate aspects of a mandala or telling a spiritual story,” the announcement says. “On a deeper level, thangkas serve as a teaching tool and a visual support for meditation, making them indispensable to the practitioner. Thangkas are both visually and mentally stimulating in helping the practitioner to internalize the enlightened qualities of compassion and wisdom.”

Two to join missions in the Philippines

Two Valley Isle Fellowship members will leave for the Philippines on Saturday to join Two Thirds World Network missions in areas hit by storms, flooding and an earthquake.

The work will include medical missions, food distribution, water filtration system installments and children’s outreach to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. The areas served will include Manila and Ilocos Sur on Luzon, which have been affected by a series of storms and flooding. The team also will travel to Bihol, which experienced an earthquake several weeks ago.

Centering prayer workshop Nov. 9

A centering prayer introductory workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 9 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Makawao.

Centering prayer is an ancient contemplative practice that helps develop a deeper relationship with God, according to a news release.

The workshop, hosted by Contemplative Outreach Hawaii and the church, is for those new to centering prayer and those wanting a refresher in the topic.

Packing party set for Sunday

Grace Bible Church is hosting a packing party from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday to pack shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for needy children overseas.

Volunteers are welcome to join in the event to pack about 200 boxes to be sent to children living in poverty in more than 100 countries. The effort is part of the nonprofit Operation Christmas Child.

People can also pack their own boxes and drop them off at the church at 635 Hina Ave. in Kahului from Nov. 18 to 25. Boxes with donated items can also be dropped off that week at Hope Chapel in Kihei and Lahaina Baptist Church.
