‘Love & Laughter: Date Night’ July 18

King’s Cathedral Maui will host “Love & Laughter: Date Night” with author and speaker Gary Smalley at 7 p.m. July 18.

Those attending the event are promised that they will laugh until their “sides bust,” according to an announcement.

At 7 and 9 a.m. July 20, Smalley will discuss “A Blessed Family,” and at 6 p.m. July 20 he’ll speak on “Making Love Last.”

All of the events are free, but there is a fee for child care.

Waipuna Chapel to host July 4 event

Waipuna Chapel will celebrate Independence Day from 4:30 p.m. until dark July 4 with family activities, including games, a water slide, shave ice, a balloon man, live music and a ground fireworks show at dark.

A barbecue/potluck dinner starts at 6 p.m. with free hot dogs and hamburgers. Participants are asked to bring a side dish, salad or dessert.

Jim Caviezel to speak Sunday

Actor Jim Caviezel, who starred as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ” in 2004, will share his faith at 6 p.m. Sunday at King’s Cathedral.

Caviezel’s other acting credits include CBS’ “Person of Interest” and starring roles in “The Count of Monte Cristo” in 2002 and “The Thin Red Line” in 1998.

Admission is free. The church is at 777 Mokulele Highway in Kahului.

Youth Fun Day weekend scheduled

The Maui Vicariate Youth and Young Adult Ministry Board will present “Let The SON Shine In” Youth Fun Day on July 12 and 13 at St. Theresa Church in Kihei.

It will be a weekend of faith, fellowship, food and fun for youths 14 to 18 years old.

Those planning to participate should register with their respective parish youth ministry leaders by Tuesday. There’s a $10 registration fee.

Paia mission obon service, dance set

Mantokuji Mission of Paia will continue its tradition of holding obon services and dances July 11 and 12, according to an announcement.

Services begin at 6 p.m. in the temple. Maui Taiko will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, and Zenshin Daiko will take the stage at the same time Saturday. Bon dance follows from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Food booths will open at 6:30 p.m.

Obon is the annual summer festival held at Buddhist temples in remembrance of deceased loved ones.

St. Joseph in Kaupo sets Mass June 29

Mass will be celebrated at noon June 29 at the St. Joseph Mission Church in Kaupo.

Fellowship and potluck will follow Mass.

The remote mission church has a Mass only when there is a fifth Sunday of the month, or four times a year.

The church is between Mileposts 33 and 34 on Piilani Highway.

Adams to speak at Unity Church

Unity Church of Maui will host Ayin Adams as a speaker during 10 a.m. Sunday services.

In an announcement, Adams is described as an “international metaphysician, spiritual director and intuitive therapist.”

She’s written seven books, including her recent “African-Americans in Hawaii: A search for identity.”

Vacation Bible school offered

Pukalani Baptist Church will offer a free vacation Bible school for children from preschool through 8th grade from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday to June 27, according to an announcement.

Children will become investigating agents for “Agency D3,” for which they will collect and log evidence about the life of Jesus.

There also will be games, music and dinner starting at 5 p.m. each night.

The church is at the corner of Old Haleakala Highway and Loha Street, across from Pukalani Superette. The Rev. Paul Kaneshiro is the church’s pastor.

Prayer conference underway today

The Kahului Seventh-day Adventist Church will host a prayer conference beginning at 6:30 p.m. today.

The free conference will continue at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Lunch will be served at noon Saturday and a breakfast on Sunday morning.

With guest speaker Pastor Pavel Goia, conference attendees will “be filled with wonder at God’s love in action as he shares personal encounters with incredible answers to prayer.”

Originally from Romania, Goia experienced hardships, difficulties and privations in a Communist country, “but his Christian experience was enriched on a daily bases by holding on to the powerful hand of God,” the announcement says.

Center will mark Buddha’s birthday

The Maui Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Center will celebrate Buddha’s birthday with prayers and meditation beginning at 6 p.m. today, according to an announcement.

The center is at 81 Baldwin Ave. in Paia.

A special ceremony will take place around the Great Paia Lha Bab Peace Stupa and in the temple gardens. The Venerable Lama Gyaltsen, the center’s spiritual director, will lead the community in prayers offered in honor of the historical Gautama Buddha.

The Peace Stupa will be adorned with lights as a reminder of the collective wish for world peace and the Buddha’s teachings on nonviolence and loving kindness.

On the full-moon day of the fourth lunar month, which in the Tibetan tradition is called Saga Dawa, three important events in the Buddha Gautama’s life are honored – his birth, his death and his attainment of nirvana.

The event will conclude with a community offering of 108 lotus lights.

Mission to celebrate its centennial

The Wailuku Jodo Mission will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a Centennial Obon Festival on June 20.

At 7 p.m. in the temple, a service will be held for Hatsu Bon (first Obon) families and a memorial to honor all the ancestors of past members and supporters over the last 100 years. The service will be followed with bon dancing.

Maui Taiko and other taiko drummers will accompany the bon dance music. Food concessions will be open in the social hall.

Makawao church to celebrate Pentecost

Makawao Union Church will celebrate Pentecost, the day that the Holy Spirit came upon the early church, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an announcement.

After months of study and prayer, three of the church’s youth members will be confirmed as part of the congregation.

Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church. It is located at 1445 Baldwin Ave., 2.5 miles mauka of Hana Highway.

Free day camp offered Jun 23-26

Kihei Baptist Chapel will host a free children’s day camp from 8 a.m. to noon June 23 to 26, according to an announcement.

Children will become special agents of “Agency D3,” described as “an investigative agency using games, recreation and fun to discover truths contained in the Bible about who Jesus is. Using their best high-tech operative skills, they will examine eyewitness reports, physical proof and biblical accounts to uncover and defend the truth about Jesus,” according to an announcement.

The camp is open to children from kindergarten through 6th grade.
