‘Trunk or Treat’ event today in Kihei

Waipuna Chapel will host a “Trunk or Treat” event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today as a “fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween.”

During the event, children go from trunk to trunk in the chapel parking lot. There will be free food, games, a glow-in-the-dark tent, a net maze, “Silly Sally the Clown,” candy and prizes.

The cost of admission is canned food, which will be donated to the Maui Food Bank.

100th anniversary special service set

Makawao Union Church will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of its community hall with a special worship service at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9.

All those who’ve gathered in the hall over the years are urged to attend the celebration and rededication.

On Nov. 7, 1914, the “Pa’ia Community House” opened with a night of opera and dance, according to an announcement.

“Those 100 years have seen many community uses of this building – from Maui High commencement exercises to community theater plays on its canted stage,” according to an announcement. “Current uses are just as diverse.”

An estate sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Kula Botanical Gardens, 638 Kekaulike Ave., will raise funds for the hall upgrades.

The church is an interdenominational community church at 1445 Baldwin Ave., about 2 miles mauka of Paia.

Free concerts offered in Kihei

Christian recording artist Julie Elias will perform free concerts Nov. 8 and 9 at the Calvary Chapel South Maui at 1655 S. Kihei Road, according to an announcement.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8, the concert will be held in celebration of the Calvary Chapel South Maui Food Pantry. The Food Pantry reopened in October in a new space on the Kihei Baptist Chapel campus, according to the announcement. Calvary Chapel and Kihei Baptist Church share the same location.

The event also will feature testimonies and information on how church members can get involved in feeding hungry people on Maui. Nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Maui Food Bank.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 9, Elias will lead a free teen event, open to all junior and senior high school students. She will teach students about “how God’s love can help them overcome rejection.” Students will receive a free, 16-page color booklet.

Pastor’s 61 years of service celebrated

Pastor Kenneth Alverio is inviting everyone to join members of the Apostolic Faith Church (Jesus Coming Soon) to celebrate and worship at 10 a.m. Nov. 9 to commemorate 61 years of preaching the “Gospel of the Kingdom of God” on Maui.

The service will be conducted by Head Pastor Billy Han Jr., who oversees Gospel work in the church headquartered in Honolulu, according to an announcement. Han will preach a “spirit-filled and spirit-directed sermon.”

Music will be provided by the Maui Band, Choir and Orchestra.

The church is at 1211 Front St. The church has a large neon “Jesus Coming Soon” sign on its rooftop near Mala Wharf in Lahaina.

Pukalani Baptist to host Harvest Party

Pukalani Baptist Church will hold a Harvest Party at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

The event will feature games, prizes, a costume parade and a cake walk.

‘Effective Prayer’ classes offered

Pastor Frances Pike of Oklahoma will teach the “Foundations of Effective Prayer” in Nov. 5, 6 and 8 sessions of the Transformation School of Ministry at the Door of Faith Church in Wailuku.

Pike will share the principles of hearing God, meditation, various forms of prayer and intercession, and journaling, according to an announcement.

The Nov. 5 and 6 sessions are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the Nov. 8 session is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For those seeking a degree, three classes cost $150. For those auditing the course, the fee is $50. An introductory class is free.

Vigil readied at Ka’ahumanu Church

Ka’ahumanu Church will hold a candlelight vigil from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 in the memory of deceased loved ones.

Light refreshments will be served.

The church will sell luminary bags with LED flameless tea lights for $5. The lights will be displayed on the church lawn. Bags may be decorated with pictures or contain scriptures and poems, among other items. A donated can good will anchor the bag. The food will be donated to the Maui Food Bank.

Luminary bags may be picked up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday or 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 1 at the church. Bags may be dropped off at the church by 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1.

Alpha Course underway at Po’okela

Po’okela Church is hosting the “Alpha Course,” according to an announcement.

The 10-week program began two weeks ago but will continue for eight more weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

The program includes free dinner, a video presentation and an exploration of the meaning of life.

Singers sought for Christian music

Male and female singers are being sought for a Christian music project, according to an announcement.

An informational meeting will be held from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Maui Room of the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului. It is not an audition. Project coordinators will explain the selection process and field questions.

Selected singers will be paid for their work on the upcoming project. Along with a description of the recording project, there will also be a sample CD and printed lyrics of the songs to rehearse with. Multi-language singers are encouraged to attend the meeting. Songs for the project will be recorded in English, Japanese, Tagalog and Native Hawaiian.

Complimentary beverages and snacks will be provided.

Garage sale will benefit missions

Valley Isle Fellowship will hold a garage sale from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, with proceeds to go to Two-Thirds World Network, a religious nonprofit mission organization.

Sale items are expected to include chairs, a tablesaw, clothes, toys, banana bread and other items.

Prayer vigil planned for the persecuted

Emmanuel Lutheran Church will host a prayer vigil from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 17.

The vigil will be open for anyone to have an opportunity for quiet meditation and prayer for Christians and other refugees suffering persecution in Syria, Iraq and other hotspots around the world.

Retreat planned at Trinity-by-the-Sea

A commuter retreat will be held by Contemplative Outreach and Trinity-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Kihei on Oct. 10 and 11 at the church.

Centering prayer, prayer walks and discussions of individual journeys will begin today at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.

‘Taste of Hongwanji’ to be held Oct. 18

“A Taste of Hongwanji” will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Kahului Hongwanji mission as part of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism’s celebration of its 125th anniversary in Hawaii, according to an announcement.

The Oct. 18 event will feature food, dancing, door prizes, games, displays, entertainment, flu shots and blood pressure readings by Walgreen’s, flower arranging and other activities.
