Jewish congregation to hold two events

The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Yom Hazikaron, Israeli Veterans Memorial Day, on Wednesday with a short memorial service at 6:30 p.m.

The memorial event honors the men and women who lost their lives in defense of the State of Israel. A Yom Ha’atzma’ut celebration will directly follow the service, celebrating the independence of the State of Israel since May of 1948.

There will be Israeli folk dancing led by Leilani Maders, followed at 8 p.m. by a Modern Israeli Music Dance Party and falafel sandwiches. A $5 donation is requested.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui is at 634 Alulike St. in north Kihei.

West Maui Buddhists to celebrate Hanamatsuri

Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth, known as Hanamatsuri or Flower Festival, will be celebrated by the West Maui Buddhist community at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Lahaina Jodo Mission, 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.

According to Mahayana Buddhist tradition, the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, was born on April 8 more than 2,500 years ago in Lumbini Flower Garden in India. His teachings are a guide to realizing a universal spirit of wisdom and compassion as a foundation for humanity.

The celebration will consist of a service that includes offering sweet tea to the infant statue of the Buddha enshrined in a flower altar and offerings of incense and flowers. The Rev. Ai Hironaka, resident minister of Lahaina Hongwanji, will deliver the dharma talk. Fellowship activities will follow the service.

The observance is co-sponsored by the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, Lahaina Shingon Mission and Lahaina Jodo Mission. All are welcome to join this celebration. For more information, call 661-4304.

Passover services, Yom Hashoah to be observed

The Jewish Congregation of Maui’s remaining Passover services are as follows:

* Today, 10 a.m., Pesach 7th Day Service; 6:30 p.m., Pesach 8th Night and Shabbat Service.

* Saturday, 10 a.m., Shabbat and Pesach 8th Day Service (including Shir Hashirim/Song of Songs and Yizkor).

Beginning Wednesday evening, Jews around the world will be observing Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Memorial Day. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, a short prayer service will be held at the Jewish Congregation of Maui. It will include poetry readings by children from Beit Shalom’s education program written by Holocaust child victims.

The service will be followed by a documentary narrated by Abba Eban and a clip about the British war hero Sir Nicholas Winton.

Young Life Seminar will begin Thursday

Po’okela Church in Makawao will offer a Young Life Seminar for families beginning Thursday and continuing on April 9, 16 and 23, followed by the first three Thursdays of May and June.

All seminars will run between 6 and 8 p.m. Dinner will be provided along with free baby-sitting. A $1 donation is requested for each dinner.

Topics include “Staying in Love” and “You’ll Get Through This.” Video presentations will be by Andy Stanley and Max Lucado.

The seminars are open to the pubic.

Children to conduct Easter program

The Apostolic Faith Church at 1211 Front St. in Lahaina will be celebrate Easter with a special program at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The program, titled “He’s Not Here – He Is Risen,” will be conducted entirely by the children of the Sunday School. The program is being directed by Dolly Alverio. The Easter program announcer is 14-year-old Brylee Carillo, the daughter of Darren and Lorna Carillo of Pukalani.

The evening service is at 7 and will be conducted by the adult members of the congregation.

Holiday services set at Kihei Lutheran

A joint Good Friday service will take place between Kihei Lutheran Church and Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea at 7 p.m. today at Kihei Lutheran Church, on the corner of Piilani Highway and Moi Place in Kihei.

The service will include readings of Christ’s Passion and the extinguishing of candles. The service will include Kihei Lutheran’s choir, as well as the men’s quartet, 4-Given.

On Easter Sunday, the resurrection of Christ will be celebrated at Kihei Lutheran Church during services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Both services will include Holy Communion, along with the congregation’s choir and hula group.

Between services, starting at 9:15 a.m., there will be a Keiki Resurrection Celebration, with a congregational potluck luau to begin at noon.

Makawao church to celebrate Easter

Makawao Union Church will celebrate the joy of Christ’s resurrection with special activities before, during and after the 10:30 a.m. worship on Easter Sunday.

The day will begin with a breakfast of hot cross buns and fruit in the Community Hall from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. After worship comes the annual Easter egg hunt for the keiki. Professional, licensed child care will be available for children up to 4 years of age starting at 9:45 a.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church. It is located at 1445 Baldwin Ave., 2.5 miles mauka of Hana Highway.

Grace Church to hold two services

Grace Church in Pukalani will hold a 6 a.m. sunrise service and 10 a.m. worship service under the big white tent at 10 Kupaoa St. on the corner of ‘A’apueo Parkway, across from Longs in Kulamalu.

A continental breakfast will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring a dish.

Cantata worship today at Ala Lani

Ala Lani United Methodist Church Sanctuary Choir, under the direction of Angela Lim, will present a cantata worship service that is designed to re-create the emotional and spiritual aspects of the passion story at 7 p.m. today at the church in Kahului.

“We Remember Calvary” is a choral work compiled by Joel Raney, which uses both traditional and contemporary hymns, worship songs, congregational singing, scripture reading and narration to paint a picture of Christ’s last days and his journey to the cross.
