‘Buddha’s Birthday’ event on Tuesday

The public is invited to join the Maui Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Center in celebration of “Buddha’s Birthday” on Tuesday’s full-moon evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Great Paia Lha Bab Peace Stupa.

The ceremony will take place outside around the Peace Stupa, where the Venerable Lama Gyaltsen will lead the service with special guest participation from other Buddhist leaders in the community.

The Peace Stupa will be adorned with hundreds of lights as a reminder of the Buddha’s teaching on loving kindness and compassion. A tribute will be made to His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama, who turns 80 on July 6, for his tireless efforts in promoting world peace through nonviolence and for his work in advocating harmony and friendship among all world religions.

The evening service will be dedicated to the relief of suffering and devastation from recent earthquakes that stuck Nepal. Donations will be accepted for this purpose.

Congregation to celebrate Shavuot

The Jewish Congregation of Maui invites residents and visitors to join events to celebrate Shavuot at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei.

The holiday will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with a Minchah Shabbat service, followed by a Ma’ariv and Shavuot service at 7:15 p.m.

At 10 a.m. Sunday, there will be a Shavuot service, including recitation of the Akdamut.

At 10 a.m. Monday, there will be a second day Shavuot service, including the chanting of Megillat Ruth as well as a Yizkor/memorial service.

Rummage sale to support missions

Po’okela Church will hold a Missions Rummage Sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds at 200 Olinda Road, a quarter mile above Makawao town.

The rummage sale will feature estate collectibles, elegant and casual clothing, accessories, furniture, household items and Kula vegetables.

Sponsored missionaries of Po’okela Church include Partners Inc. mission in Indonesia, Youth With A Mission, Wycliffe Bible Translators, World Venture in Japan and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

All proceeds go to support sponsored missionaries and community faith outreach organizations.

School’s leadership course set to begin

Garnet Pike, founder of Transformation School of Ministries, will teach classes from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 3 and 4, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 6 at the Faith in Jesus Church in Wailuku.

The subject will be “Spiritual Gifts and Leadership,” a course that will enable students to discover and develop their spiritual gifts and to put them to use in the Body of Christ, according to an announcement.

All are welcome to attend. The cost is $50 a semester for audit students. No homework is required of the audit students. Degree students pay $150 a semester. They are required to do assignments in their work toward obtaining a degree of Applied Science in Theology at the end of two years.

Graduates pay $30 a semester.

Holy Innocents retreat May 23

Holy Innocents Church will hold a “Pray as Jesus Did” retreat from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 23 at the church at 561 Front St. in Lahaina.

The retreat will give an introduction and instruction and let people experience a meditative form of Christ-centered prayer that expresses one’s desire to be with “our Father who is in secret.”

The short prayer retreat will be directed by the Rev. Austin Murray, pastor of Trinity-by-the-Sea Church in Kihei.

Thousands served by care van

A Cup of Cold Water, an all-volunteer, faith-based community care van, served 2,570 people and conducted 52 mission runs in Central, South and West Maui during the first four months of this year, the organization said.

The outreach ministry focuses on distributing “the basic needs of nutrition,” water, clothing and comfort to Maui’s homeless.

It is coordinated and run by members of Maui’s four Episcopal churches and is supported by volunteers from the Buddhist, Roman Catholic, Nazarene, Congregational, Hawaii Protestant, Grace Bible and New Hope Chapel churches, as well as other volunteers.

The organization relies solely on the “generosity” of monetary and in-kind donations from churches, church grants, individuals, businesses, hotels and charitable trust gifts.

Volunteers are welcome, including other churches.

Pastor will teach at Wailuku church

Pastor Steve Willis from Charlotte, N.C., will teach “Bible Study Resources and Methods” from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Faith In Jesus Church in Wailuku.

Two classes in this ministries series have already taken place.

The course stresses the spirit of revelation. Willis teaches on study aids, computer programs and various biblical interpretations.

The introductory class is free for ministry students; audit students pay $50 per semester; degree students pay $150 a semester; and graduates who wish to keep coming pay $30 a semester.

Pilgrimage to Rome and Holy Land set

The Faith In Jesus Church is seeking Christians who want to join a Bible Lands Cruise from Oct. 14 to Nov. 1.

An optional three-day visit to Rome precedes the 16-day cruise, which begins there and continues to Athens, Corinth, some Greek islands, Turkey, and concludes with three days in Israel, visiting the most important sites for Christians.

The cost is about $5,000 from Maui, overnighting on the Mainland to break up the long trip. For those not wanting the tour of Rome, the cost will be $600 less.

De Jesus will speak at King’s Cathedral

The Rev. Wilfredo De Jesus will be the featured speaker at King’s Cathedral’s Homecoming Celebration at 6 p.m. on Satur-

day. There will also be a 35th anniversary of ministry honoring Pastors James and Colleen Marocco from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with a free luncheon and a ho’ike.

In 2013, De Jesus was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world and recognized for his leadership and influence with evangelical and Latino audiences.

Day of Prayer to be held in South Maui

Calvary Chapel South Maui and Kihei Baptist Chapel, both located at 1655 S. Kihei Road, welcome everyone to join in prayer for the nation at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. on Thursday in observance of the annual 64th National Day of Prayer. The sanctuary will also be open for personal prayer throughout the day.

MPD invited to prayer observance

The National Day of Prayer observance sponsored by the Maui Christian Ministers Association will be held in front of the State Office Building in Wailuku from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Because of the recent strife between civilians and police forces in the nation, the association wants to pray for the Maui Police Department and invites all police officers to attend. The public is asked to bring lei to honor the officers.
