Priest to speak at clergy dinner

The Rev. Bill Petrie will be the keynote speaker at the 30th annual Clergy Appreciation Dinner hosted by the Maui Knights of Columbus Council 8578 on June 26 at Cafe O’Lei at The Dunes at Maui Lani.

Petrie will be speaking about the 20 years he spent as a missionary priest working with Mother Teresa in Kolkata, India. He is currently the head pastor of the Molokai Catholic community.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with recognition of our departing religious, followed by dinner at 7, an awards presentation at 8 and dancing at 9. Entertainment will be provided by the NBA All Stars Band.

Event marking birthday June 28

The traditional Osuna Fumi Pilgrimage celebrates Kobo Daishi’s birthday. His legacy includes the Shikoku Pilgrimage of 88 temples associated with his life, which thousands of pilgrims attempt each year in Japan.

The public is invited to walk on sandbags taken from each of the 88 temples and offer prayers. This celebration will begin at 10 a.m. June 28 at Kula Shingon Mission, 119 Puanani Place. Follow signs to Haleakala Crater; the mission is 50 yards beyond the crater turnoff.

‘Oh Jonah’ performance set

Kindergarten through 7th-grade students will perform “Oh Jonah,” a musical retelling of the story of Jonah, at 9 a.m. Sunday at Wailuku Union Church, 327 S. High St.

The music and play were written and composed by Allen Pote and Carole McCann.

The performance is part of Joyful Noise 2015, a joint ministry of Iao United Church of Christ and Wailuku Union Church, said Pastor Robb Kojima of Wailuku Union Church.

“Over the years, we have found those who retell these stories with music and drama remember them for a long time. Everyone has fun learning and sharing, and the children offer this ministry to residents of Hale Makua and to the two congregations,” Kojima said.

The community is invited to join both congregations for worship at 9 a.m. Sunday at Wailuku Union Church.

‘Linsanity’ to be shown Saturday

The public is invited to a free screening of “Linsanity: The Movie” at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hope Chapel in Kihei.

This Faith in Action production is about the journey of Jeremy Lin and his quest to play professional basketball. There will be a free drawing for a Lin autographed jersey and a personal video from Lin.

Jawz Taco truck and Outrigger Pizza will begin serving at 5 p.m. Professional athlete Kenny Dobbs will also be present to share some of his story and greet fans.

BasketballMAUI will have a table for last-minute sign-ups for its basketball camp, which begins Monday.

The evening is being sponsored by the Jeremy Lin Foundation.

Pasalo will be ordained a deacon

The ordination of Ernesto (JaR) Pasalo Jr. to the diaconate will take place Saturday at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wailuku.

The ordination will begin at 10 a.m. with the Rt. Rev. Robert Fitzpatrick, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, officiating. Episcopal clergy from throughout the state will be joining in the ordination. A reception will follow.

Pasalo, who attended King Kekaulike High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., in May with a master of divinity degree.

Pasalo, son of Ernesto and Flory Pasalo of Makawao, became involved in Good Shepherd’s youth activities and was a leader in the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii’s youth programs.

“This is a such an important event in the life of Good Shepherd Church,” said K. Peter Lee, senior warden of Good Shepherd, which is awaiting the arrival of its new rector from Canada in the summer. “JaR grew up in Good Shepherd’s youth program, became involved in the Episcopal Diocese’s youth programs and was called to serve. The entire Good Shepherd Church ‘ohana is very happy that JaR will be ordained as a deacon.”

Pasalo will be assigned by Fitzpatrick to a church. He is expected to be ordained to the priesthood in the fall.

Jehovah’s Witnesses convention set

Maui and Lanai Jehovah’s Witnesses will hold their annual convention at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center from July 3 to 5. The theme of this year’s program is “Imitate Jesus!”

“As Christians, a core belief of Jehovah’s Witnesses is that Jesus lived his life as a model for us to follow,” said Clifford Mukai, a convention spokesman. “The ‘Imitate Jesus!’ convention will examine Jesus’ life, as outlined in the Bible, and emphasize how all – regardless of their background, lifestyle or religion – can benefit in practical ways from his example and teachings.”

A highlight of the program will be the keynote address July 3, titled “Concealed in Him Are All the Treasures of Wisdom.”

The convention is open to everyone. There is no admission fee. Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary donations.

An estimated 1,800 people will come to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center for the Bible-based programs. During the morning of July 2, an expected 200 volunteers from all over the island will be providing the facility with comprehensive pre-convention maintenance at no cost.

Meeting, lunch for ministers Tuesday

There will be a get-acquainted meeting for all Christian ministers and spouses from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Faith In Jesus Church, 432 Waiehu Beach Road, in Wailuku.

Fellowship and prayer for each church represented will be followed at noon by a light lunch. To RSVP for lunch, call 244-1286 by Monday.

All pastors are reminded that they will be guests at the Hawaiian Islands Ministries’ sponsored marriage enrichment seminar called Fight Night. It is being held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Wailuku church. It is designed to be a fun date night in which couples will laugh, learn and grow closer together, according to an announcement.

Obon festival in Wailuku on June 19

Wailuku Jodo Mission will hold its obon festival June 19 at 67 Central Ave. in Wailuku.

The temple service will begin at 7 p.m. with Buddhist chanting and a prayer offering by the Rev. John Hara, resident minister, and a sermon by Bishop Gensho Hara.

The obon dance will begin at 8 p.m. with taiko drumming. Maui Taiko will be on hand to perform “Fukushima Ondo.”

Food concessions open at 6:30 p.m., serving hot dogs, teriyaki plate, chow fun, andagi, chili and rice, shave ice and other snacks.

Obon is an annual summer festival held at Buddhist temples around the island in remembrance of loved ones who have died. The public is welcome to join this cultural event.

Parking will be available at Maiama I Ke Ola Health Center (the old Ooka’s location).

Free keiki activity offered in Pukalani

Pukalani Baptist Church announces a weeklong free activity for preschoolers through 8th-grade students.

Participants will be “taking a journey off the map to uncharted territory where they will begin to understand that obedience to God can lead them beyond the expected,” according to an announcement. Games, music and dinner are all part of this 5 to 7:30 p.m. event from June 15 to 19.
