Jewish High Holy Days services continue

The Jewish Congregation of Maui welcomes the community to services at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei, led by Rabbi David Glickman with Cantorial Soloist Amichai Levitz. The schedule of services for Shabbat, Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are as follows:

* Today – Shabbat evening service at 6.

* Saturday – Shabbat morning service at 9:30.

* Sunday – Community Sukkah building and decorating party at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. Erev Sukkot services at 6 p.m., with kiddush in the sukkah.

* Monday – First Day of Sukkot services at 9:30 a.m. with Hallel and Hoshanot, bring lulav and etrog.

* Tuesday – Second Day Sukkot services at 9:30 a.m., including Hakafot, bring lulav and etrog.

* Oct. 2 – Shabbat evening service at 6.

* Oct. 3 – Shabbat morning service at 9:30.

* Oct. 4 – Erev Shmini Atzeret service at 6 p.m.

* Oct. 5 – Shimini Atzeret service including Geshem, the prayer for rain, and Yizkor, at 9:30 a.m. Erev Simchat Torah service including Hakafot and dancing at 6:30 p.m.

* Oct. 6 – Simchat Torah service at 9:30 a.m., with everyone called to the Torah, including the children.

Church plans Kids Clothing Exchange

North Shore Church Maui will present a Kids Clothing Exchange and Kids Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Haiku Elementary School, 105 Pauwela Road in Haiku.

Children’s clothes that are no longer needed may be traded for larger sizes. There also will be a free kids fair with a bounce house, games, barbecue and shave ice.

The exchange is offered on the fourth Saturday of every other month.

High Holy Days services announced

The “Days of Awe” (Yamim Nora’im) begin with Rosh Hashanah, on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (Sunday evening), and end 10 days later on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. During this time, Jews all over the world pray for a happy, healthy new year, and atone collectively and personally for any misdeeds in the year that is ending.

* Monday – First Day Rosh Hashana Service at 9 a.m. with Torah reading and traditional blowing of the shofar. Tashlich at the beach following the service. Evening service for Second Day Rosh Hashana at 6:30.

* Tuesday – Second Day Rosh Hashana service at 9 a.m.

* Sept. 18 -Shabbat Shuva evening service at 6.

* Sept. 19 – Shabbat Shuva morning service at 9:30.

* Sept. 22 – Erev Yom Kippur service at 6 p.m., with Kol Nidre at 6:30; doors open at 5:30.

* Sept. 23 – Yom Kippur morning service, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Mincha at 4 p.m. with Yizkor at 5 and Ne’ila at 6:15. Havdalah and Breakfast at 7 p.m. Children’s service, 4:45-6 p.m.

Kingdom days theme of program

Grace Church will honor the personalities and events of 19th-century Kingdom of Hawaii starting Sunday at the 10 a.m. service on the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus.

The observance will continue the following five Sundays at the same time and place.

The church’s hula ministry will perform and there will be music with Ata Damasco on Sept. 20 and others in the weeks to come. All are invited to attend.

Grace Church is at 270 ‘A’apueo Parkway in Pukalani.

Weekend prophetic conference to begin

The 20th annual King’s Cathedral Maui & King’s Chapel East Oahu Prophetic Conference will take place today through Monday on Maui and Oahu.

Guest speakers will include Emanuele Cannistraci, Jim Laffoon, Tom and Jane Hamon and Jim Critcher. James and Colleen Marocco will be the conference hosts.

Meditation lecture set for Thursday

Rick Jyozen Beal will lead a free sitting and walking meditation lecture and practice at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lahaina Jodo Mission, 12 Ala Moana St.

Beal is visiting from Pasadena, Calif. He is a guest instructor for a Kyudo (Japanese Zen Archery) workshop being held at the Lahaina temple Sept. 12-13. Those interested in participating or finding out more about the Kyudo archery workshop should contact bodhihanna@gmail.com or 463-9656. Space is limited for the archery workshop.

Beal has trained in martial arts from a young age. He became interested in Japanese Buddhism and its philosophies and officially began training as a Zen priest in 2000. He has since continued his training and has been given permission to teach meditation and shares his practice at Jizo-an in Pasadena, where he resides as am abbot.
