2 youths assigned to Mainland missions

Daisy Aiwohi, daughter of Bishop Alma and Lory Aiwohi, and Kamalani Kawaa, daughter of Llewellyn and Luana Kawaa, of the Waiehu Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints received their mission calls to serve.

Aiwohi, a Kamehameha Schools Maui graduate and a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho, has been assigned to the Salem, Ore., Spanish-speaking mission. Kawaa, a King Kekaulike High School Hawaiian immersion graduate, has been assigned to the Fort Worth, Texas, mission.

Both report Dec. 16 to their training centers, Aiwohi in Mexico and Kawaa in Provo, Utah. Their missions are for 18 months.

Makawao church readies for Christmas

Makawao Union Church will begin the preparations for Christmas with a special “Hanging of the Greens” worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. In word and song, the congregation will decorate the sanctuary while telling the stories behind many of the holiday traditions.

Also present will be Kristine Tisinger, a missionary serving with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana, who will speak on her ministry with children in that African country. She will be available for questions during Aloha Hour, a time of fellowship and refreshments after worship. All are welcome to attend.

Makawao Union Church is a interdenominational community church located at 1445 Baldwin Ave., about 2.5 miles mauka of the Hana Highway. For more information, call 579-9261.

5th Sunday mass in Kaupo on Nov. 29

St. Joseph Catholic Church at Kaupo will celebrate a noon Mass on Nov. 29, thus resuming its Mass schedule for every fifth Sunday of any month with five Sundays (usually four times per year).

The remote church is at Piilani Highway, between Mileposts 33 and 34, in southeast Maui.

Fellowship and potluck lunch will follow Mass.

Thanksgiving Day service planned

The Christian Science church in Kahului will be holding a Thanksgiving Day service beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The hourlong service includes the reading of a Bible lesson and time for members of the congregation to testify to the spiritual harvest or their blessings throughout the year.

Child care will be provided for preschoolers.

The church is at 160 W. Kamehameha Ave., across from the Kahului Public Library.

Thanksgiving and Advent in Makena

Keawala’i Congregational Church will hold its annual Thanksgiving Day service and potluck beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Makena.

A potluck luncheon will be held at noon. Turkey, trimmings, drinks and paper goods will be provided. Members, friends and visitors are invited to bring a side dish to share.

On Nov. 29, the church will hold its Advent service at 6:30 p.m. The adult choir, Na Leo Nahenahe, under the direction of Stephen Haines, will perform. Also entertaining will be the members of Music Ministry Team and special guest Leighanna Locke, a soloist.

A series of readings will also be presented.

Lahaina church changes Mass time

Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina has announced a Mass time change.

Beginning Nov. 29, the 11 a.m. Sunday Mass will be at 10:30 a.m.

Regular Mass times are as follows: Saturday vigil at 5:30 p.m., Sunday Mass at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. A Spanish Mass is at 7 p.m.

The church is at 712 Wainee St.

‘Surviving the Holidays’ seminar offered

New Hope Kahului Church is sponsoring a free “Surviving the Holidays” seminar to help people grieving a loved one’s death from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at a private residence in Wailuku. Topics to be covered include: how to deal with emotions, what to do about traditions, tips for surviving social events, and how to find hope for the future.
