Conference to open with concert

The fourth annual Marianist Valley Isle Liturgy and Arts Conference at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Wailuku will open with a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church center.

The featured artists include veteran composer of liturgical music Jesse Manibusan and Father Michael Joncas.

The conference continues March 5 with a prayer service at 8:30 a.m., followed by keynote addresses and workshops.

Additional musicians and composers from Oahu and the Big Island will also participate. Joining keynote speakers Manibusan and Joncas will be Kevin Newell, Joe Camacho, Joe Frias, Paulette Ching, kumu hula Sissy Lake Farm and Toni Bissen of the Pu’a Foundation.

Maui Prophetic Conference tonight

Church of The First Born Pastor Jay Freitas and New Hope Kahului Pastor Kipi Higa are hosting the Maui Prophetic Conference from 7 to 9 tonight at University of Hawaii Maui College in the Pilina Building.

Topics to be covered include “The Great Deception,” “Mark of the Beast” and “The Rapture.” Admission is free.

Holy Land trip topic of meeting

A informational and enrollment meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Faith in Jesus Church for people interested in making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this fall.

The church is at 432 Waiehu Beach Road in Wailuku, near Sack N Save.

A special itinerary covering two weeks in the Holy Land has been planned for those who are intending this to be their only pilgrimage. Israel will be covered from north to south with professional guides and air-conditioned buses. There will also be a free day in Jerusalem after the guided tour.

People attending the meeting Saturday are asked to bring a copy of their passport. Instructions on how to obtain a passport will also be provided.

Visiting masters to present panel theater

Wailuku Jodo Mission will host two masters of panel theater from Japan for a 30-minute performance at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wailuku Jodo Mission social hall, 67 Central Ave. in Wailuku. The performance will tell the story of Jodo Buddhist founder Saint Honen.

Panel theater is a storytelling form using felt panel board and cutouts. The two-dimensional pieces are brought to life with the expert movement and storytelling skills of the masters. Professor Tsukasa Takahashi of Bukkyo University in Kyoto and professor Ryojun Kouda of Shukutoku University of Chiba City are leading instructors of panel theater.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Services, suppers to be held during Lent

Emmanuel Lutheran Church is having special midweek services and suppers during the season of Lent.

On Wednesday evenings through March 16, the church will have a 5:30 light supper followed by a 6:30 worship service. The theme for the worship services is “There’s no place like home,” based on readings from Isaiah 40-55, God’s message of comfort and restoration to the exiles, and how this points to Christ.

Priest to speak at Lenten retreat

St. Anthony Church in Wailuku will present the Rev. Ken Deasy as guest speaker during a Lenten retreat at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Deasy is a Catholic priest who has worked many years in inner city Los Angeles, bringing people of different faiths together, according to an announcement. He was a story adviser for the movie “Bruce Almighty” and the author of “Get Off the Cross – Someone Else Needs the Wood.”

Pilgrimage to Holy Land offered

A special pilgrimage to the Holy Land is being designed for this summer by Pastor Barbara Tengan of Faith In Jesus Church.

While most itineraries touch on some of the highlights that are of interest to people who know the Bible, it usually takes two or three trips to cover all the important places, according to a news release. This pilgrimage is being designed to cover all in two weeks and stay in places where travelers will be more in touch with local people.

After the itinerary is completed, a sign-up meeting will be scheduled. The first 30 people will be guaranteed a spot for this specialized tour.

Ash Wednesday Mass times set

Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina has announced Ash Wednesday Mass times and Lenten devotionals.

For next week’s Ash Wednesday, Mass times are 7 and 8:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Maria Lanakila. There will be a noon English Mass and 6 p.m. Spanish Mass at Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua.

Lenten devotionals include an additional daily Mass at noon at Maria Lanakila, Monday through Friday.

On Fridays during Lent (Feb. 12-March 18), there will be Eucharistic Adoration from 7:30 a.m. until noon. Stations of the Cross will be at noon Fridays at Sacred Hearts Mission, and 6:30 p.m. at Maria Lanakila.

There will be a Parish Mission from Feb. 29 to March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Maria Lanakila; guest speaker will be Father Arnold Diaz, pastor of St. Elizabeth’s in Aiea, Oahu.

Lenten penance service will be March 3 at the conclusion of the mission. The public is welcome to the devotionals.

Lahaina church to hold Youth Service

Pastor Kenneth Alverio invites the public to join The Apostolic Faith Church, Maui Branch, for its biannual Youth Service at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The song service will consist of choir, orchestra and special selections presented in its entirety by the young members of the Sunday School Department. Dolly Alverio of Lahaina will be youth preacher. Her sermon is titled “Look Up, Your Redeemer Cometh.”

Kaleb Makimoto, a freshman at Maui High School, will be the program’s youth announcer. He is the son of Alvin and Cynthia Makimoto of Wailuku. Cynthia is the church’s youth director.

The adult service is at 7 p.m. The church is recognizable by its large neon sign, “JESUS COMING SOON,” situated on the rooftop at 1211 Front St. near Mala Wharf in Lahaina.

The church’s ongoing TV telecast is aired each Sunday at 8 a.m. on KITV4 from the headquarters in Honolulu. When pre-empted by sporting events, the program is aired at 2 p.m.

Auction, luncheon set for Feb. 14

Keawalai Congregational Church will hold a catered luncheon and silent auction Feb. 14 on the church grounds in Makena.

Proceeds will help Maui residents in need.

Luncheon tickets cost $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 will be admitted for free.

The silent auction will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Winning bidders can pay for and pickup their items at 12:45 p.m. (cash or check only).
