Holy Week services set at 2 churches
Maria Lanakila and Sacred Hearts Mission churches have announced Holy Week services:
Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina will have no morning Mass Thursday through March 26. On Holy Thursday, there will be a 7 p.m. Mass of the Lord’s Supper followed by solemn adoration, closing with night prayer at 10 p.m. On Good Friday, there will be a 9 a.m. prayer followed by a 3 and 7 p.m. Good Friday liturgy.
On Holy Saturday, there will be a 9 a.m. prayer with blessing of Easter food baskets. There will be no 5:30 p.m. Mass. There will also be an 8 p.m. Great Vigil of Easter Mass.
Easter Sunday Mass will be at 7, 9 and 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. Mass in Spanish.
Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua will have a Holy Thursday Mass in Spanish at 6 p.m. On Good Friday, there will be a 3 p.m. liturgy in English, as well as at 6 p.m. in Spanish.
On Holy Saturday, there will be a 6 p.m. Great Vigil of Easter Mass in Spanish. Easter Sunday Mass will be at 7 and 9 a.m.

Chapel announces Easter services
Waipuna Chapel in Kula has announced its schedule of Easter services:
* Good Friday, 7 p.m. – A quiet service of reflection on Jesus’ crucifixion. Quiet music and a message from Pastor Shaun Waite. Children’s program through grade 5.
* Easter Sunday, 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. – Three services of celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead to new life for all. Joyous music, special dance and choir, and a message from Waite. Children’s program, including an egg hunt, for toddlers through grade 5.
Waipuna Chapel is at 17 Omaopio Road, at the corner of Omaopio Road and Kula Highway.

Purim festivities planned in Kihei
The Jewish Congregation of Maui will celebrate the festival of Purim around sunset Wednesday. Purim celebrates the Jewish people surviving the genocidal plans of the Persian tyrant Haman, who wished to annihilate all the Jews of Persia in its 127 provinces.
To honor the memory of the Persian Jews in strife, Jews around the world refrain from food and drink on the day leading up to the celebration. This day is known as “The Fast of Esther.” This year the morning-to-evening fast will occur Wednesday.
The Jewish Congregation of Maui invites everyone to join the 6:30 p.m. Purim festivities Wednesday. The story of Esther will be read by students in the congregation’s education program.
It is customary on Purim to put on skits and parodies. This year, Kathy Collins will bring her character “Tita” to entertain with a pidgin Purim spiel.
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, there will be Shacharit/morning service followed by a traditional reading of Torah, with Sam Shnider reading the Megillah. In the spirit of the holiday, attendees are asked to come in costume and bring mishloach manot, or small portions of food, to give to friends and acquaintances.
In observance of the directive to help the needy from Purim to Passover, the Jewish Congregation of Maui will be collecting packaged and canned foods for the Maui Food Bank from Tuesday through April 19. Items may be dropped off at the synagogue. Financial contributions are also welcomed by the Maui Food Bank.
The Jewish Congregation at Beit Shalom Synagogue is at 634 Alulike St. in Kihei, on the corner of Kaonoulu and Alulike streets.

Po’okela Church plans services
Po’okela Church in Makawao has announced its Easter Sunday service, as well as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Tenebrae services:
* Maundy Thursday Night service, 6 p.m. – Communion, foot washing and dinner.
* Good Friday Tenebrae service, 7 p.m.
* Easter Sunday service, 9 a.m. – Breakfast to follow service, as well as an egg hunt and jumping castle for keiki.

Good Shepherd announces services
Holy Week services begin at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wailuku at 5 p.m. Saturday. There will be a liturgy and blessing of the palms at 7 and 9 a.m. Palm Sunday. The 9 a.m. service will begin in the church office courtyard, followed by a processional into the church.
Maundy Thursday will be observed by a 7 p.m. service with music by the Senior Choir. At the end of the service, the altar is stripped and a Garden of Repose will be set up and prayers can be offered until 10 p.m. Prayers will continue Friday at 10 a.m.
The church will commemorate the Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m. March 25. A 7 p.m. service will include the Veneration of the Cross and the Solemn Liturgy. Communion will be offered from the Reserved Sacrament.
The Great Vigil of Easter with baptism begins at 8 p.m. March 26. Attendees are reminded to bring bells to ring during the service hymns.
There will be Festival Eucharist services at 7 and 9 a.m. March 27. A Hawaiian Easter sunrise service from 6:15 to 6:45 a.m. with chant and welcome of the sun on the morning of resurrection will lead into the 7 a.m. service.
At 9 a.m., the church will celebrate Holy Baptism and music will be led by Ferdinand Cajigal, the Senior Choir and the Hand Bell Choir. Attendees are reminded to bring their bells for this service to ring during the service hymns.
Attendees are advised to come early to the services if they would like to be seated in the church. All children attending either service are invited to join in the Easter Egg Hunt on the church grounds at the conclusion of the 9 a.m. service. Everyone is also invited to enjoy a potluck Easter brunch in the Parish Hall after this service.

Easter week set at Keawala’i church
The Easter Week schedule of services for Keawala’i Congregational Church in Makena includes:
* Palm/Passion Sunday, 10 a.m. – The tradition of members and friends wearing their finest lauhala papale, or hats woven out of pandanus leaves, will continue. Women and men will have an opportunity not only to commemorate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, but to commemorate the events of the week that led to his arrest, trial and crucifixion. Na Leo Nahenahe, the adult choir, will be singing “Benedictus.”
* Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m. – The adult choir will be singing “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.” The service will be based on an ancient service known as Tenebrae. It symbolizes the suffering and death of Jesus. Candles will be used in the service to represent Christ as the Light of the World.
* Easter Sunrise service, 7:30 a.m. – The outdoor service will include the tradition of the Easter floral cross and the sharing of The Lord’s Supper. Members and friends are invited to bring single-stem flowers or lei for the cross. The adult choir will sing “‘Oia Ku’u Hau’oli – He is Our Joy!”

Special Palm Sunday service set
Makawao Union Church will open Holy Week with a special Palm Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The worship service will feature special music and decorations, the procession of the children and a palm branch for everyone to celebrate Jesus riding into Jerusalem.
All are welcome to attend. Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church serving Maui for over 150 years. It is at 1445 Baldwin Ave., 2.5 miles mauka of the Hana Highway.

Musical part of anniversary
The International Christian Fellowship will be celebrating its 29th church anniversary with a special musical drama, “Joseph the Dreamer,” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The musical will be held in the Princess Nahienaena Elementary School cafeteria, 816 Niheu St., Lahaina. This musical will be performed by ICF’s Young People Ministry.

St. Theresa sets Holy Week schedule
St. Theresa Church in Kihei has released its schedule for Holy Week and Easter services.
The church will hold Palm/Passion Sunday services at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 7 and 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Mass in Spanish will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Saturday.
There will be no 4:30 p.m. reconciliation Saturday.
There also will be no 7 a.m. Mass on Holy Thursday, but there will be a 7 p.m. Mass that day, followed by a solemn adoration. At 10 p.m., night prayer will be conducted to close adoration.
On Good Friday, the church will celebrate the Lord’s Passion. There will be no 7 a.m. Mass, but there will be Masses at noon and 7 p.m.
Holy Saturday will bring an Easter vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall immediately after Mass. (There will be no reconciliation at 4:30 p.m. and no 5:30 p.m. Mass.)
On Easter Sunday, Mass will be celebrated at 7 and 9:30 a.m. – both in the church and in the courtyard. (There will be no 5:30 p.m. Mass.)
The church office will be closed March 28 and 29.
