Special Mass set at Kaupo church

In addition to its regularly scheduled Mass on May 29, St. Joseph Mission Church in Kaupo will also celebrate Mass at noon Sunday to observe the Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker.

The Rev. Arwin Rebollido, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Hana, will be the celebrant during Mass on both days.

St. Joseph Mission Church is between Mile Markers 33 and 34 on Piilani Highway.

There will be a potluck meal and fellowship after Mass.

Church welcomes guest priest

The Rev. Bruce DeGooyer will be the celebrant and preacher at Trinity-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church at 9 a.m. Sunday.

DeGooyer was ordained a vocational deacon in 2004 in Illinois, where he served at St. Matthew’s Church in Bloomington for eight years. After retirement from his secular work, he was ordained a priest in 2012 and was named curate at St. Matthew’s and provided supply throughout the diocese.

Most recently, DeGooyer served as the supply priest at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Kapaau on the Big Island in early 2014, and returned in 2015 to work with the congregation as it prepared for a new vicar.

The community is invited to both the service and a “Meet and Greet Potluck” afterward. The church is at 100 Kulanihakoi St. in Kihei. For more information, call 879-0161.

National Day of Prayer is Thursday

The Maui Christian Ministers Association is calling all Christians to observe Thursday as the National Day of Prayer at the state building in Wailuku. An event will be held from noon to 1 p.m.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture.

The Rev. James Marocco of King’s Cathedral will emcee the event. Pastors wanting to lead prayer during the observance may call Faith In Jesus Church at 244-1286 to be included in the program. Attendees are encouraged to wear aloha attire and lei.

Congregation to mark Yom Hashoah

The Jewish Congregation of Maui’s remaining Passover services and Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Memorial Day – are as follows:

* 10 a.m. today – Pesach 7th Day Service.

* 6:30 p.m. today – Pesach 8th Night and Shabbat Service.

* 9:30 a.m. Saturday – Shabbat and Pesach 8th Day Service (including Shir Hashirim/Song of Songs and Yizkor – Memorial Service).

On Wednesday, Jews around the world will be observing Yom Hashoah by memorializing the murder victims of the Nazis, among them more than 6 million Jews. The following observance will take place:

* 6:30 p.m. Wednesday – Short prayer service.

Passover schedule set at Beit Shalom

On the evening of April 22, Jews around the world will begin celebrating Passover. The Jewish Congregation of Maui will be holding Passover and Shabbat services and its annual Community Seder as follows:

* April 22 – 10 a.m., Chametz burning at synagogue; 6 p.m., evening service (indoors); 6:30 p.m., Community Seder (outdoors).

* April 23 – 9:30 a.m., Pesach first day service, Tal/Prayer for Dew; 7 p.m., evening service, Count First day of Omer.

* April 24 – 10 a.m., Pesach second day service.

* April 28 – 6:30 p.m., Pesach seventh night service; 6:31 p.m., light candles.

* April 29 – 10 a.m., Pesach seventh say service; 6:30 p.m., Pesach eighth night and Shabbat service; 6:32 p.m., light candles.

* April 30 – 10 a.m., Shabbat and Pesach eighth day service (including Shir Hashirim/Song of Songs).

Those wishing to attend the Passover Seder on April 22 must make reservations by Tuesday. The Passover Seder will include a recounting of the Jewish exodus from Egypt and a four-course dinner with traditional foods, stories and songs. The Seder will be led by Rabbi David Glickman. The congregation is also having its annual food drive benefitting the Maui Food Bank through Tuesday. Factory sealed, nonperishable foods may be dropped off at the synagogue.

Public invited to potluck Seder

Since Passover is the “Feast of Unleavened Bread,” potluck dishes should not include breads, cookies, cakes or pasta. Non-kosher foods, such as pork and shrimp, should also be avoided.

Guest speaker to deliver dharma talk

Lahaina Jodo Mission will hold a three-temple joint service with Wailuku and Kahului Jodo missions at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Lahaina.

Special guest speaker Gary Link is visiting from New York. He is a longtime Buddhist practitioner in the Jodo Shu tradition and a board trustee of the Buddhist Association of the U.S. His dharma talk, “Pure Land (Jodo) Buddhism in the U.S. and the Bodhisattva Ideal,” introduces Jodo Shu, or the Pure Land sect, and the potential of this Buddhist teaching in the U.S., and discusses the idea and role of the bodhisattva (enlightened being) in Pure Land Buddhism.

Pure Land (Jodo) Buddhism has a long history in Hawaii as one of the major Japanese Buddhist traditions in the islands, the event announcement says. The public is welcome to join in the service and dharma talk at Lahaina Jodo Mission at 12 Ala Moana St. For more information, call 661-4304.

Celebration set on Buddha’s birthday

The West Maui Buddhist community will celebrate the birth of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (observed on April 8), at the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, 551 Wainee St., with a service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Celebrated in the Japanese Buddhist tradition as Hanamatsuri, or Flower Festival, a statuette of the baby Buddha is enshrined in a flower altar, symbolizing Lumbini Flower Garden where the baby was born. Sweet tea is poured over the baby Buddha to honor the birth and express gratitude for the Buddha and his teachings.

The celebration is sponsored by the West Maui Buddhist Council (Lahaina Hongwanji, Lahaina Shingon and Lahaina Jodo missions).

The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ai Hironaka of Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, assisted by the Rev. Takayuki Meguro of Lahaina Shingon Mission, who will give the dharma talk.

Hanamatsuri event at Santos center

The Maui Hanamatsuri Association will hold its annual Hanamatsuri event beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku.

Hanamatsuri, commemorating the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha 2,500 years ago, is one of the most celebrated observances in the Buddhist traditions. Following the service, there will be games, prizes, entertainment and a potluck lunch. Sponsoring temples include the Kahului Hongwanji, Kahului Jodo, Makawao Hongwanji, Wailuku Hongwanji and Wailuku Jodo missions.

Guest organist to perform at service

Organist Mark Thallander will return to Makawao Union Church to perform at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

While probably best known for his 18 years of ministry at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., Thallander also comes with a inspiring story of recovery after a 2003 automobile accident deprived him of the use of his left arm.

The church will also host a Centennial Choral Celebration at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert, presented by the Mark Thallander Foundation, launches the 100th anniversary celebration of the Makawao Union Church sanctuary. Performing will be a 50-voice choir and instrumentalists from Maui and the Mainland. There is no charge for admission; a free-will offering will be received. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Old Testament a topic of class

The Transformation School of Ministries class for April will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 9. Ryan Jackson from North Carolina will be teaching on the Old Testament, wisdom and prophecy.

The school is held at the Faith in Jesus Church, formerly known as the Wailuku Door of Faith Church, at 432 Waiehu Beach Road. Anyone interested in learning about the Bible and its doctrines is invited to join the class.

The introductory class is free, then audit students are $50 a quarter and degree students are $150 a quarter.

Registration will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Orientation for pilgrimage set

The first orientation class for The Holy Land Pilgrimage led by Pastor Barbara Tengan will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Faith In Jesus Church at 432 Waiehu Beach Road.

Enrollment is still available. If possible, attendees are asked to bring a copy of their passport and a $50 administration fee.

The dates of the pilgrimage are Oct. 31 to Nov. 17. There will be a post-pilgrimage tour of New York for those interested.
