Guest pastors teach at Wailuku church

Transformation School of Ministries at Faith in Jesus Church (formerly Door of Faith Wailuku) at 432 Waiehu Beach Road in Wailuku will be hosting Pastor John Youell, accompanied by his wife, Pastor Anne Youell, on Wednesday, Thursday and Aug. 6. They will be teaching on the “Spiritual Disciplines of a Leader.”

Classes will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and Aug. 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a potluck luncheon.

This first introductory class is free. The normal Bible school tuition is $150 per quarter for degree students; audit students pay $50 per quarter; and students who already have their associate degrees pay $30 per quarter.

Bishop to visit Trinity Episcopal

The Rt. Rev. Robert L. Fitzpatrick will celebrate the Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea in Kihei. Concelebrants will be Vicar Bruce DeGooyer and newly ordained priest John Hau’oli Tomoso. A brunch will immediately follow the service in honor of the bishop’s visitation.

Wailuku obon event begins tonight

Wailuku Hongwanji will have its annual obon event tonight and Saturday. Each evening will begin with a Hatsubon service starting at 6:45. This service is intended to respect those members of Wailuku Hongwanji who have died over the last year. Resident minister the Rev. Shinkai Murakami will be delivering the Hatsubon sermon at the services.

The bon dance will begin at 8 p.m. In addition to the festive and colorful dancing, there will be food items for sale prepared by Cub Pack 40, Scout Troop 40, the judo club, Wailuku Roselani 4-H and the Buddhist Women’s Association. Games for children will be offered by the Dharma School. Those interested in visiting Wailuku Hongwanji’s historic temple during the evening are welcome.

Christian Women to host brunch

There will be a free women’s brunch from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Faith in Jesus Church at 432 Waiehu Beach Road in Wailuku. The speaker will be Barbara Ferraro, head of the Hawaii Chapter of Concerned Women for America and also Young Women for America. This Christian Women of Maui County brunch is open to both men and women.

Also on the program will be two women who will introduce themselves and their ministries:

* Paula Higuchi, Biblical Counseling Center of Maui.

* Maile Kekona Tsurusato, Neighborhood Place of Wailuku.

Backpack blessing set in Makawao

Makawao Union Church will hold its annual “Blessing of the Backpacks” during the 10:30 a.m. worship on Sunday. The blessing marks the beginning of the new school year and reminds the children and youth that they continue their journey in education with God’s care and the community’s support.

Students are reminded to bring a backpack or book bag. The church will also recognize teachers, honoring their ministry in educating young people. All are welcome.

Fifth Sunday Mass at Kaupo church

The Rev. Arwin Rebollido, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Hana, will celebrate Mass at noon July 31 at St. Joseph Mission Church at Kaupo (between Mile Markers 33 and 34 on Piilani Highway.

This special Mass at the remote church occurs every month that has a fifth Sunday. There will be a potluck meal and fellowship after Mass.

‘Cowabunga Farm’ Bible school offered

Grace Baptist Church in Lahaina will offer a free vacation Bible school for youths age 4 through high school from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through July 29.

The “Cowabunga Farm” theme program will include Bible stories, songs, puppets, snacks, crafts and a missionary story. There will be a closing program at 7 p.m. July 29.

Roundtable talk at Kahului church

The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Kahului is offering a three-week roundtable discussion called “Talking Story with Jesus.” Meetings will be in the Reading Room at 160 W. Kamehameha Ave. from noon to 1 p.m. on three successive Tuesdays beginning this Tuesday, followed by Aug. 2 and 9.

The first meeting on Tuesday will focus on Jesus’ parable of the talents as given in Matthew 25:14-30. It will be a richer experience if participants read the parable in advance, according to an announcement, but it is not required.

Grant helps free meal program

The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wailuku was presented with the Monsanto Fund Grant Award to support its Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen feeding program.

Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen has been serving the community for 13 years. It partners with nonprofit organizations and families to provide free, hot meals to individuals and families in Central Maui every Sunday.

A total of $7,500 was donated by the Monsanto Fund to Good Shepherd Church. It will be used to purchase an ice machine and to replace and upgrade kitchen equipment.

Week of activities planned in Pukalani

Pukalani Baptist Church is offering a week of free activities for children ages 4 through those who have finished 5th grade, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. July 18-22. Participants will learn about heroes in the Bible and heroes of the Christian faith.

There will be a free dinner followed by the program that includes games and other activities.

Convention to include 2 movies

Two feature-length movies highlighting trust and loyalty will be shown during the three-day annual Jehovah’s Witnesses convention at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

The first video drama, “Hope for What We Do Not See,” will be shown at 3:25 p.m. Saturday. The second, “O Jehovah, . . . I Trust in You,” will be shown at 1:50 p.m. Sunday.

The three-day event at the MACC begins at 9:20 a.m. today. An estimated 1,600 are expected to attend. Witnesses have been extending personal invitations to households on Maui and Lanai over the past few weeks to attend the “Remain Loyal to Jehovah!” convention.

There is no admission fee. Witness conventions are supported entirely by donations.

New vicar to lead service on Sunday

Trinity Episcopal Church By-the-Sea announces the selection and arrival of its new vicar. The Rev. Bruce DeGooyer’s first official service as vicar will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The church is at 100 Kulanihakoi St. in Kihei on the site of David Malo’s 1852 historic Kilolani Church. Services are open to the public.

DeGooyer and his wife, Sylvia, have relocated from the Diocese of Illinois. He previously served as supply and interim clergy on the Big Island.

Interim pastors to help ministries

Faith in Jesus Church in Wailuku will introduce its new interim pastors from Oahu during the 10 a.m. service Sunday.

Fred and Dena Welch will be helping with the men’s, women’s and youth ministries. There will be a welcoming luncheon following the service.
