Church to celebrate its 50th anniversary

Maui Evangelical Church, located at 256 Hina Ave. in Kahului, will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sunday.

Pastor Miguel Morales will share a celebratory message at the 8 a.m. worship service. The celebration will include the dedication of the church multipurpose hall in honor of the Rev. Walter Baloaloa, who served the church as pastor for over 39 years. The Rev. Charles Buck, conference minister of Hawaii-UCC, will lead the dedication ceremony.

There will also be recognition of all the founding members by church President Claron Miguel. Church Musical Director Pam Petersen and family will lead the congregation in praise and worship. In addition, the men’s and women’s fellowship, as well as the young adults’ and children’s ministries, will perform worship songs and dance in celebration of this milestone. Mike Molina will serve as the worship leader.

A fellowship luncheon will follow immediately after the service.

The church traces its roots to the Alabama Camp in Puunene in 1922 to serve the Filipino immigrants working on the plantation. When the plantation villages were closed, several members of the church banded together to start a new church in Kahului. The Hina Avenue lot was purchased in 1966. The church was dedicated on Aug. 27, 1972.
