Healing Mass set at St. Anthony Church

St. Anthony Church in Wailuku will conduct a Healing Mass at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Church Center. Everyone is welcome to receive Jesus’ gift of healing, according to the announcement.

‘Prayer Matters’ is title of seminar

Women of all ages are invited to a women’s seminar titled “Prayer Matters” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at Pukalani Baptist Church. The keynote speaker will be Felicia Chang, Bless China international director.

Pets will be blessed at Trinity by the Sea

Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church will commemorate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a Blessing of Pets at the 9 a.m. service on Sunday. The historic outdoor church is located at 100 Kulanihakoi St. in Kihei. All pets must be leashed or in crates.

Jewish Congregation plans High Holy Days

The “Days of Awe” (Yamim Nora’im) begin with Rosh Hashanah on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (the eve of Oct. 2) and end 10 days later after Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. During this time, Jews all over the world pray for a happy, healthy new year, and atone collectively and personally for any misdeeds in the year that is ending.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui welcomes the community to High Holy Days services at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei. They will be led by Rabbi David Glickman with cantorial soloist Amichai Levitz. The schedule is as follows:

Services for Rosh Hashanah begin Sunday at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30). They continue on Monday for the First Day Rosh Hashanah at 9 a.m., with Torah reading and traditional blowing of the shofar. There will be Tashlich at the beach following this service. Evening service for Second Day Rosh Hashanah will be at 6:30 p.m. Then on Tuesday, the Second Day Rosh Hashanah service will begin at 9 a.m.

Services for Yom Kippur begin on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m., with Kol Nidre at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:30). They continue on Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mincha at 4 p.m. with Yizkor at 5 p.m. and Ne’ila at 6:15 p.m. Havdalah and Break Fast will be at 7 p.m.

A community Sukkah building and decorating party will be on Oct. 16 at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. Erev Sukkot, the Festival of Booth, service will be at 6 p.m., with kiddush in the sukkah. On Oct. 17, the First Day of Sukkot, service will be at 9:30 a.m. with Hallel and Hoshanot. Bring lulav and etrog. Then on Oct. 18, the Second Day of Sukkot service will be at 9:30 a.m., including Hakafot; again, bring lulav and etrog.

The last of the festival season services will be Oct. 23 – Erev Shmini Atzeret service at 6 p.m. On Oct. 24 there will be a Shimini Atzeret service including Geshem, the prayer for rain, and Yizkor, at 9:30 a.m. Erev Simchat Torah service including Hakafot and dancing will be at 6:30 p.m. And lastly, on Oct. 25 there will be a Simchat Torah service at 9:30 a.m., with everyone called to the Torah, including the children.

Regular Shabbat services will continue through the High Holy Days as scheduled on Fridays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m.

Jodo missions plan joint gathering

Members of Kahului, Lahaina and Wailuku Jodo missions will gather at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Wailuku Jodo Mission for a joint service and fellowship gathering.

The Rev. Kanjun Nakano of the Jodo Mission of Hawaii, Honolulu, will be the guest minister and present a dharma message as well as perform Buddhist gathas.

All members and dharma friends are invited to join in this service. Wailuku Jodo Mission is located at 67 Central Ave.

Buddha Fest 2016 registration open

Buddha Fest 2016 will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Kahului Hongwanji Mission in Kahului. This year’s theme is “The Power of Spiritual Values.”

Keynote speaker Pieper Toyama, founding head of the Pacific Buddhist Academy in Honolulu, will speak on his experiences creating and implementing a new high school with a curriculum that is completely based on the Buddhist values of gratitude, compassion, mindfulness and the unconditional acceptance of others.

The program will continue with a discussion led by a panel of local individuals whose work and avocation are centered on the needs of others. They will share the ways in which they are able to translate their spiritual values for the benefit of individuals and society.

The discussion will include audience participation and be followed by a vegetarian lunch.

The requested donation is $10. The registration deadline is Oct. 7.

Course to cover Christianity basics

“Pilgrim: A Course for the Christian Journey” will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wailuku, according to an announcement.

The course, held over six Wednesday sessions, will introduce participants to the basics of Christian faith. The course is part of the church’s celebration of its 150th anniversary.

Dinner will be provided.

The course dovetails with the installation of the Rev. Craig Vance as the church’s new rector at 10 a.m. Oct. 1. Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick, Episcopal bishop of Hawaii, will install Vance during the special service.

Vance, who is from Vancouver, British Columbia, first heard about the pilgrim program while visiting England.

There, the Church of England put together the course with an online video designed to introduce viewers to Christian faith based not upon persuasion but on participation.

Pilgrim is about spiritual practice: how to pray and use spiritual resources in everyday life.

Good Shepherd Church is one of the first churches in the United States to introduce the pilgrim program.

Good Shepherd was established on Maui by a Royal patent in 1866.

Memorial planned for Sister Rose

A memorial Mass will be celebrated for the late Sister Rose Damien Malabon at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Church in Kahului.

Sister Rose was a Maui girl who became the island’s first sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1951.

She died June 29 on Oahu. She was 84. Her funeral services and burial were on Oahu in July.

Light refreshments will be served in the parish hall after the Mass, followed by a “talking story” and shared memories of Sister Rose.

Malabon was named “Inez” when she was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Hamakuapoko. Later, she was baptized as “Agnes” at Holy Rosary Church in Paia, according to information provided by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

She attended Holy Rosary School and St. Anthony Girls School in Wailuku, and she graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.

She taught in California before returning to Hawaii in 1960. Later, from 1968 to 1978, she taught at several schools on the Mainland.

In 1978, she was brought back to Hawaii permanently. She taught at St. Joseph School and St. Theresa School on Oahu and Christ the King School in Kahului. At Christ the King, she was the parish’s director of religious education and liturgy resource person.

Brunch to feature guest speaker

Faith in Jesus Church will host a free Women’s Brunch from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 24. The special guest speaker for this month will be Nora Finberg.

Finberg, born in Tehran, Iran, left her homeland after the 1979 Islamic Revolution installed a new government that closed all the universities. Wanting to continue her education, she emigrated to Israel. She graduated from Hebrew University in Jerusalem with her degree in pharmacy in 1986 and now practices at the pharmacy in the Pukalani Foodland.

Finberg’s husband is pastor of Grace Church in Pukalani. She is an “in-demand” speaker on the subject of Islam and its role in the modern world, according to an announcement.

All women are invited to this free Christian Women of Maui County brunch. Those who like to cook are welcome to bring a dish to share. The brunch will be potluck-style.

Free keiki program offered in Pukalani

Pukalani Baptist Church is offering a free program Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for children in kindergarten to 5th grade. The program includes games, Bible lessons and memory verses.

Church prepares for 150th anniversary

Wailuku Union Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at 327 S. High St. in Wailuku. To mark the event, the church will dedicate its new Allen organ during the worship service and will host a brunch reception after the service.

In 1866, a handful of Christians formed Wailuku Union Church and began construction of its first building on the corner of South High and Kaohu streets. The church currently operates a food pantry, hosts many community events in its facilities and shares its sanctuary with a Samoan congregation, which will be joining the festivities.

Commemorative items such as a church cookbook, T-shirts, tote bags, Bibles and an organ plaque are available for sale. To make a purchase or for more information, contact the church at 244-9177.

Visiting rabbi will be guest speaker

Makawao Union Church will welcome Rabbi Jeffery P. Feinstein as a guest speaker at its 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday. He will speak on “Being a Chosen People.”

Feinstein hails from Stockton, Calif. His education at the University of the Pacific in Stockton was interrupted by a tour of duty in the Chaplain Corps in Vietnam, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. After graduating with a master’s degree in communications from the University of the Pacific, and after a long career in the corporate world, he retired and chose to attend the Rabbinical Seminary International in New York City to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a rabbi. He serves as the founding rabbi of Kehillat HaShem, a small congregation in Marietta, Ga.

McDonald to speak at Grace Church

David McDonald of David McDonald Ministries International will speak at the 10 a.m. Sunday service of Grace Church at the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus.

McDonald will also speak at the church’s 6:30 nightly tent meetings Sunday through Wednesday on the church property across from Longs Drugs at 10 Kupaoa St. in Pukalani.

Youths receive confirmation

Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu led a Mass celebration at Maria Lanakila Parish in Lahaina on Aug. 19 as 14 youths received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and new sisters from the Missionaries of Faith were formally welcomed and blessed by the bishop. A potluck dinner followed with the confirmed youths, their families and sponsors.

Mother Agnese Faleono, mother superior of the religious order, came from Rome for this occasion and expressed how grateful she was to Silva, Father Joseph Pathiyil and the parishioners for becoming a part of the Diocese of Honolulu by performing a traditional Samoan dance along with Sisters Mary Trang and Roviesa Orias Jadlocon. The sisters teach at Sacred Hearts School and help in the parish.

School of ministry announces classes

The Transformation School of Ministry at Faith in Jesus Church invites the public to earn credit toward a two-year associate degree. The next speaker will be Pastor Bill Terry, teaching “Ministry in the Local Church.” Classes are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 10.

Terry serves as the men’s ministries director for the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, as well as the national coordinator for Disaster Relief USA. The introductory class is free, then $50 per quarter for audit students and $150 for those seeking a degree.

Autumn festival set at Wailuku mission

The Great Autumn Festival will take place at Maui Jinsha Mission on Sept. 17. There will be a church service at 4:30 p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m. and entertainment at 6:30 p.m.
