Maccabiah Games rep speaks Sunday
A representative of the International Maccabi World Union and the Maccabiah Games will be speaking to the Jewish Congregation of Maui at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Macabi Carasso, a representative of the union and the Maccabiah Games, will discuss the games, the third largest sporting event in the world, the Jewish Congregation of Maui news release said. The Maccabiah is a gathering for Jewish athletes worldwide to compete in a variety of sports in Israel.
"Participation in the Maccabiah strengthens the participants' Jewish identity and their connection to the state of Israel," the news release said.
The 20th Maccabiah will take place in July, during the 50th anniversary of the unification of Jerusalem, the news release said. An expected 10,000 athletes from 80 different countries and 20,000 supporters, guests and visitors are expected to visit Israel for the event.
The competition, held every two years, takes place over two weeks and features 43 sports utilizing 65 venues. There will be some Olympic athletes participating as well, but there are four divisions, including a paralympic division.
Carasso is reaching out to all Jews with any athletic abilities as well as those who are interested in the games to come to the informational meeting at The Jewish Congregation of Maui on Sunday.

Mauians join Baha'i temple dedication
Motoko Caldwell, Layli Gonzalez and Heidi Mathison of Maui were on hand when a new Baha'i House of Worship for South America was dedicated on Oct. 13-16 in Penalolen, near Santiago, Chile.
About 5,000 members of the Baha'i faith from 110 countries gathered for the dedication.
This temple joins seven other continental temples that include the Temple of North America in Wilmette, Ill.
