Pohnpeian church plans events
The Rev. Golten Charley, pastor of a newly formed Pohnpeian Protestant Church, United Church of Christ Pohnpei Ministry, has announced that the church will be celebrating multiple events Feb. 17, 18 and 19.
First will be a celebration of the Christian Endeavor, which is annually celebrated by the United Church of Christ Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. This event will be hosted by UCC PM on Maui this year with invitations to Pohnpeian congregations on Hawaii island, Oahu and Maui. The church will also be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the ministry, worshipping and carrying out its ministry at the Waihee Protestant Church in Waihee. A third celebration is the ordination of two "wanpauron," or ministers, and a "sounpadek," or lay minister, who is permitted to share the words of God at services.
Scheduled events for the three celebrations will begin with a 7 p.m. dinner Feb. 17 at the Waihee Protestant Church.
On Feb. 18, a special service to celebrate the Christian Endeavor will start at 9 a.m. with all visiting congregations participating. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a break from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
At 2 p.m., the church anniversary celebration will start. It will include traditional events like the invitation for sharing of kava from a common container, songs and dances. At 7 p.m., all who attend this event will be invited for dinner, which will include the serving of food cooked on the church grounds in the "omw."
On the final day of celebration, Feb. 19, a service will start at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Midian Neth, conference minister of the Pohnpei United Church of Christ, as the speaker. Neth will conduct the ordination of the wanprouns and soumpadek at this service.
All events will be held at the Waihee Protestant Church site and are open to the public.
UCC Pohnpei Ministry is the second Pohnpei United Church of Christ congregation on Maui and was recently accepted for exploratory membership in the 'Aha O Na Mokupuni 'O Maui, Moloka'i Ame Lana'i, Association of United Church of Christ churches of the Tri Isle.
