EVENTS CALLING YOU . . . Postponed because of hurricane-turned-tropical storm Iselle in early August, Maui Calls is on target for Saturday, Sept. 27, at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.
As usual, the MACC’s signature fundraiser will have lei greeters putting a smile on your face at the front entrance of the annual event as you are serenaded by the Hula Honeys on ukulele and Joel Katz on steel guitar.
Sip fine wines from visiting vintners, savor two food items each from top Maui restaurants and listen to Jimmy Mac & the Kool Kats.
You may choose the walkabout style of attending or you may opt for the tableside service as an upgrade. Then pick up a bidding paddle at auction to vie for trips to Bora Bora and Africa; tickets to the San Francisco Opera; and also a two-night stay at Kupeke Beach House for up to four guests, courtesy of Debbie Von Tempsky.
Food highlights include panko-crusted, curry-fried oysters with dynamite aioli and shiso guacamole by Three’s Bar & Grill; lobster-and-edamame hush puppies with snow-pea slaw by Hula Grill; Kobe-beef sliders with Maui-onion marmalade by Spago; and lamb-sausage sliders with Tokyo negi-fennel sauerkraut by Amasia.
Vintners from such stellar estates as Duckhorn, John Anthony, Orin Swift and Saintsbury will be there pouring their finest with many others.
Speaking of the MACC, the TEDxMaui 2014 lineup has plenty for the foodies among us when the all-day event with lunch and reception kicks off Sept. 28.
The presenters include Sunny Savage, wild food harvester, expert forager, teacher and adventurer; and Daniel Anthony, food sovereignty leader, local farming advocate and driving force behind the movement to bring taro or “kalo” back to our classrooms and kitchens. For tickets, call 242-7469 or visit www.mauiarts.org.

BITS AND PIECES . . . The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is still lingering on our palates. Now, food chairmen and acclaimed chefs Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi are coming right back at us with more events.
Yamaguchi will tee off Friday with his 17th annual Roy’s Restaurants Golf Classic at the Kaanapali Golf Course. It’s raised a total of $627,000 over the last 16 years for Imua Family Services, and the awards banquet is always yummy. To register, call 244-7467.
Wong’s Amasia will present its next Chef Series Dinner Friday, Sept. 26 and the celebrated chef will be in attendance, making kampachi poke with sambal, ja chai, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts and black beans.
His chefs will prepare the other courses, from roast pork belly with summer flavors to hoisin rack of lamb to Keahole lobster steamed in rice paper, at the garden-level restaurant in the Grand Wailea.
Who remembers when Maui Culinary Academy and Sansei teamed to make the biggest sushi to get into Guinness World Records? It was at War Memorial Stadium and that buggah was big at 100 yards long!
Now, I hear that partakers in the Hawaii Rice Festival on Sept. 28 at Ward Center on Oahu plan to set a Guinness World Record for the largest loco moco. It must weigh a whopping 1,102.31 pounds.
The managers of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort are as pleased as pie that the Molokini Bar & Grill won the Best Brunch on Maui this year. Saturday, the restaurant will flow with the L’ Esperienza Italiana three-course, food-and-wine education class for $45 per person.
Cash & Carry in Kahului will morph into Island Grocery Depot on Saturday and the owners want you to come and help them celebrate. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., sample both local and national food products, munch hot dogs and chips and sip free drinks. Shop for exclusive savings and try to win great prizes, according to owner Nelson Okumura.
