EVENTS CALLING YOU . . . Maui is a rockin’ and a rollin’ with food events, that’s for sure. The Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival will draw the throngs on Saturday to the Maui Mall (Dining Out).
A pumpkin patch, handmade goodies, food and fun keiki games will attract the Upcountry knee-high set at Carden Academy’s Fall Festival in Pukalani on Saturday. . . not to be confused with the Fall Harvest Festival on Sunday at Haku Baldwin Center in Makawao with food trucks, food vendors, pony rides and petting zoo.
“Despicable Me 2” will screen at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s A&B Amphitheater. It’s free, young uke virtuoso Aidan James will perform beforehand, and popcorn, shave ice, snacks and candy will be available as well as full dinner options. “Of course, kids always seem to enjoy just running around on the grass!” says Barbara Trecker, the MACC’s bubbly marketing director.
Yet another Oktoberfest will be doing the chicken dance on Maui. Bring your lawn chairs and blanket to the Ocean Vodka Distillery in Kula from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday for an Oktoberfest.
Benefitting Pacific Cancer Foundation, it will be presented by Maui Brewing Co., so beer will be added to the mix of live music by Grammy winner John Cruz, Santana-style guitarist Joe Cano, ace keyboardist Fulton Tashombe and saxophone master John Zangrando. Cost is $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Call 242-7661.
Of course, Brigit & Bernards Garden Cafe in Kahului will continue with Oktoberfest every Friday and Saturday this month; and Makena Beach & Golf Resort will kick up its heels with goulash, pretzels, schnitzel and autumn beers on Saturday, Oct. 25, on its oceanfront lawn.
On Oct. 24 and 25, Lahaina Plantation Days will appeal to the masses under the historic smokestack in Lahaina with island restaurant foods, beer and coffee tents, farmers market, non-stop entertainment, multicultural demos and a carnival zone for keiki.
Noble Chef is the signature fundraiser for Maui Culinary Academy, and the 18th annual affair will transpire on Nov. 1 at The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui. Read all about it in next week’s Maui Scene.
But wine lovers must mark their calendars for Nov. 21 for Sip and Savor, a pouring of more than 100 wines from 14 wineries, paired with savory new offerings by Maui’s top chefs. Grand Wailea will set the stage at its Reflections Pool for $85 per person. This stellar, 21-and-older event will also benefit Maui Culinary Academy.

FOR RESTAURANT LOVERS . . . Maui’s food and beverage industry is a tight-knit and picky group, and it appears everyone is giving the new Cow Pig Bun: Burgers & Bourbon in Kihei the thumbs up.
Greg Shepherd, formerly F&B at Andaz Maui as well as a liquor expert with Southern Wine & Spirits, has teamed with Lynn Stettler in the Cafe Carmen location in Maui Research & Technology Park.

“We’ve got air conditioning inside, and we just built a new 500-square-foot deck outside,” says Shepherd. “We’ll have late-night events like dueling sommeliers, and knife ‘fights’ with chefs in the kitchen.”
