A STORM OF EVENTS . . . When Hurricane Ana breezed by further south of the islands than first expected, the winds were kept at bay. But it did postpone some fun events that are now blowing this way.
For instance, the Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival is now rescheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Maui Mall in Kahului.
“The decision was made as a safety precaution and to provide certainty to attendees, vendors, volunteers and entertainers,” says Fred Evangelista of the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce.
Wailuku Hongwanji Mission will now commemorate its 115th anniversary with a celebratory brunch on Sunday. Nov. 2. For more details, call 244-0406.
Other events are right on target. Chef Paris Nabavi will present another cooking class at his beautiful Kaanapali home on Saturday. Wander through his garden, pick some herbs, bring a bottle of wine to share and donate $100 to Grow Some Good West Maui school garden programs as you savor braised saffron lamb shank and more. Touchdown for Tatas kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Dollie’s Pub & Cafe in Kahana as a benefit for the Pacific Cancer Foundation of Maui.
“It’s a sea of pink,” says Dollie’s owner Jim Anderson. “Pink donation jars are in the restaurant. Everybody wears pink. You’ll see pink cars in the parking lot, pink mopeds, pink hair. It’s fun!”
Basically, you donate $5 or more and then you are eligible to win prizes from 150 island vendors. The Redskins will battle the Cowboys, and after each quarter, prizes are raffled off. Savor $5 happy hour pupu, such as quesadillas, nachos, and mini Sloppy Joes and discounted beer.
Speaking of Kahana, RB Steak House just closed. But founder-chef Raul Bermudez is still up and running with his hugely popular Sands of Kahana restaurant.
Bangkok Cuisine in Kahului is also closed with a sign that reads: Tiki Tiki Thai Cuisine coming soon. . . and rumors are swirling that there will be a new brewpub in Kihei by next spring.
For teenagers: Construction is underway on Ululani’s Shave Ice & Manapua across the street from Baldwin High School and Kaiser Permanente in The Maui Lani Center. It will be Ululani’s fifth store on Maui.
Roselani Place in Kahului will present its first Chopped Cooking Competition from 1 to 3 pm. Friday with Maui Culinary Academy students competing, and it’s free and open to the public.

DESSERT TIME . . . Maui Culinary Academy student and “milkshake master” at Peggy Sue’s in Kihei, Clarissa Logsdon recently debuted her Sweetie’s ice cream nachos at the mall’s popular annual car show.
Daughter of island Pastry Chef Casey A. Logsdon, owner of Maui Wedding Cakes and the creator of Roy’s famous chocolate souffle, she is following dad’s footsteps pursuing the sweeter side of life.
Speaking of desserts, Life is Sweet is coming up Nov. 8. Sponsored by Wailea Beach Mariott Resort & Spa and The Shops at Wailea, it will be held at the mall as a benefit for Best Buddies Hawaii. Maureen McCormick, aka “Marcia” from “The Brady Bunch” will be a celebrity host, popping over to Maui between filming two movies. Raiatea Helm will perform a special concert.
