ASIAN FAVORITE . . . One of the most popular Central Maui dining spots is Ichiban The Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Kahului Shopping Center.

The name is Japanese and sushi, tempura, donburi and udon are staples. But the owners are Chinese and so you will find egg rolls, potstickers, stir frys, lemon chicken and shrimp chow mein on the menu.

“We will feature lion dancers at noon on Saturday, Feb. 21,” says owner-chef Patsy Chan. “I cooked at the hotels here for 11 years, and so I’ll do specials like jai, stir fry shrimp and beef, very good oxtail soup and miso butterfish. I season it myself.”

Portions are very generous and you may dine in or take out. Ichiban will also participate with a food booth in Maui Mall’s Chinese New Year, also on Feb. 21.

VALENTINES AND MORE . . . While my Dining Scene section covered Valentine’s Day options last week, some additional info has popped up.

MauiGrown Coffee Store, near the historic smokestack off Lahainaluna Road, is the place to shop for the coffee lover in your life.

“We’re famous for our French Kiss coffee; it’s red catuai beans with a dark roast,” says partner Diane Boyd. “We also sell chocolate-covered espresso beans in cute Valentine’s heart packages, and we have Mokka coffees to sample and taste.” Call 661-2728.

Saddle up to the StopWatch Bar & Grill in Makawao for Valentine’s Day dinner. Choose from macadamia-nut ahi or New York steak and shrimp, both served with garlic mashed potatoes and salad. Do save room for desserts, such as cherry pie, cheesecake and lava cake, baked in house by manager Frank Border. Want to sing to your sweetie? Stick around for karaoke with Dudley Deponte from 9 p.m. to midnight and sing your heart out. The best part is, it’s free. Call 572-1380.

From its perch in the West Maui mountains in Waikapu, Kahili Restaurant will serve an all-you-can-eat feast from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Valentine’s Day.

Chef Eddie Munoz will delight with fresh oysters on the half shell and chilled shrimp with Jack Daniels sauce. His team will carve prime rib to order, and red-velvet cupcakes will top it off. Last week, I listed the wrong price for adults. It’s $34.95 for adults, and $17.50 for keiki 5 to 12 years of age. Call 242-6000.

While I do apologize for the error, I’ve got even more egg on my face, below.

Scene’s esteemed music contributor, Jon Woodhouse, points out that the song, “Red, Red Wine” was written by Neil Diamond in 1968.

I called Bob Marley “Mr. “Red, Red Wine” last week in this column in regards to a Marley tribute at Charley’s in Paia. Marley did record it, but it was UB40 who took it to new heights.

Are you ready to eat unprocessed foods? Chef Abbie Jaye will lead a cooking demo at 7 p.m. today in the Cameron Center in Wailuku.
