FROTHY AND FUN . . . There’s a sleeper of a beer pub and restaurant at the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in Kaanapali.
Mauka of the beachwalk, the Kaanapali Grille & Tap Room offers ocean views and beers brewed fresh on Oahu by its parent company.
The owners of Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurants in Hawaii opened the tap room last fall after they founded the Waikiki Brewing Co. on Oahu.
“It all started when some cooks at Cheeseburger started brewing their own beer at home, and the owners decided to take it to the next level,” says General Manager Vladimir Porac. “The brewmaster is cool, he makes some great beers, and the food is exceptional.”
Baby-back ribs come in half or full racks, seasoned with dry rub and glazed with black-strap molasses and barbecue sauce. Cheeseburgers are big and beefy. And pizzas are crunchy and perfect for sharing.
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa’s Japengo, also in Kaanapali, will present its first Maui Tastemakers Series event Friday.
“Each event presents a unique menu carefully crafted to feature one of our valued Maui partners, including farmers, artisans, fishermen and beverage makers,” says Executive Chef Greg Grohowski.

BITS AND PIECES . . . Saddle on up to the Carden Jamboree starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. Savor some classic Southern-style barbecue and lots of fun. Carden Academy Maui’s scholarship fundraiser is a hoe-down and a half at Oskie Rice Polo Field under big tents with plenty paniolo decor. Three’s Catering will barbeque kiawe-smoked and root beer glazed beef brisket, mesquite char-grilled chicken, ribs with guava-chipotle sauce and make garden-fresh chili, three-bean and Caesar salads, honey-chipotle glazed corn breads and four cheese mac ‘n cheese. There will also be live music, dancing, auction and pie baking contest. Tickets start at $100. Call 573-6651.
Want to party? The Coconuts Fish Cafe in Kihei will celebrate its sixth birthday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today by donating 25 percent of its sales to Maui Humane Society. As the story goes, the owners are thankful to the nonprofit as that’s where they adopted their cat, Coconuts, after which the restaurant is named.
Every last Friday of the month, Chef Jojo Vasquez and DJ Eliza Escano collaborate on the fabulously fun Beats and Eats at The Plantation House restaurant in Kapalua. The sunset event from 5 to 8 p.m. combines their passion for food and music.
Vasquez creates a pop-up menu of elegant appetizers and artisanal cocktails. Desserts are created by The Plantation House’s up-and-coming pastry chef phenom, Yi Song, and Escano plays a set that begins with a mellow soulful vibe that eventually turns up the heat.
On May 3, Night With the Flowers will be held under the full moon at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens in Kahului. The gardens’ fundraising dinner will include Maui venison, pohole salad, seafood chowder and more by Chef Kealoha Domingo of Oahu, desserts by John Cadman of the Maui Breadfruit Co., and Hawaiian music and hula.
There are still some seats left for the new dinner show called “Broadway A La Carte” set to dazzle on Friday night in Waikapu at the King Kamehameha Golf Course Clubhouse.
