BITS AND PIECES . . . Want to support local Maui farmers and homesteaders? Then head to where jacarandas are the fullest range of purplish blue at Mile Marker 16.9 on the Kula Highway for Da Taste of Keokea from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“Admission will be $1 per person, with attendees able to buy and savor the cuisine offered by participating chefs and cooks,” says publicist Kekoa Enomoto. “Event organizers promote zero waste, and urge diners optionally to bring their own reusable plates, bowls, cups and silverware. In our cool country climate, diners may consider bringing warm clothing and beach chairs or mats to lounge on and enjoy the day’s festivities.”
Featured foods include kalua pork with watercress, chow fun, pasteles, poi, sausages, chicharon, pulled-pork sliders, cilantro chicken wraps, smoked meat plates, Vietnamese hot noodles, salads and drinks.
Tacos and tequila are taking on a new twist at Tommy Bahama Restaurant in The Shops at Wailea now through June 19. Fillings include roasted portobello mushrooms, chimichurri steak, carnitas, tuna or shrimp while toppings range from fresh, housemade Kula corn salsa to cauliflower relish. Unusual margaritas include the Cantaloupe Sunset and the Mango Habanero.
Molokini Bar & Grille in Makena will present a Taste of Oregon at 6 p.m. today as part of its popular Food & Wine Education Series. For $45, those 21 and older get arugula with Tillamook white cheddar and roasted filberts, Osso Buco and cedar-plank North Pacific salmon with Willamette Valley pinot gris, Routestock pinot noir and Oregon Domaine Serene wines.
Matteo’s Osteria in Wailea will host a fundraiser for Nepal on Saturday. Enjoy music by Italian guitarist Andrea Razzauto and violinist Adonijah Imgrund, fine art by Dario Campanile, cheeses by Mauro Gramuglia and an eight-course menu in a rainbow of colors by Mattero Mistura. Love to watch cooking shows? TS Restaurants Corporate Chef Scott McGill appears with farmer Geoff Haines of Waipoli Hydroponics on “Localicious Maui” at 8 p.m. Tuesdays in May on Akaku Community TV.

Representing Maui in Vancouver on Wednesday will be Chef de Cuisine Gevin Utrillo of Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa’s Japengo. He’ll be cooking at a Maui Pop Up Party at the Blue Water Cafe in Canada to pump up interest in the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival that replaces Kaanapali Fresh on Labor Day weekend at Hyatt and other fun resort venues.
Speaking of fun, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival is coming June 11 to 14 at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and the Montage Kapalua Bay. Seats are going fast for celebrity chef demo-luncheons by Michael Mina of “Aqua” fame and Charlie Palmer of Aureole.
