TV HAPPENINGS . . . With all of the talk about the upcoming Maui Film Festival, it’s interesting to note that the island will also be in the spotlight with two upcoming television programs.
Today, WGBH and Fine Cooking magazine announced the tour schedule for the filming of “Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking” season three on PBS. This award-winning series hosted by Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans will visit some of the most unique locations across the U.S. to inspire home cooks everywhere.
Soon to be filmed on Maui are Andaz Maui Executive Chef Isaac Bancaco and Maui Fresh Streatery food truck chef-owner Kyle Kawakami. They’ll go spearfishing on the north shore and cook a dinner at a taro farm for the show that will air this fall.
Peter Merriman of Merriman’s family of restaurants on the Big Island, Maui, Oahu and Kauai will be filmed for the next episode on Hawaii Island field trips to Kekela Farms, Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii, and Kahua Ranch. Chef Lee Anne Wong of Koko Head Cafe will represent Oahu at the Honolulu Fish Auction.
Grand Wailea’s Yvonne Biegel is the executive producer of a TV special called “Search” about culturally centered foods based on the Hawaiian moon calendar. It’s also based on the resort’s new Ka Malama Dinner Series to be served at the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a restaurant there on the third Thursday of each month.
Humuhumu’s Chef de Cuisine Michael Lofaro and the Grand’s Hawaiian Cultural Ambassador Kainoa Horcajo are featured in the special foraging, fishing and gathering foods in remote valleys and in the ocean. “Traditional calendars observed the movement of the stars, sun, moon and all natural phenomena to create a holistic place-based resource and behavior management system. This system not only outlined what could be gathered or harvested at what times in what ways, but it protected our food sources for generations to come,” says Horcajo.
Kathy Muneno of KHON-2 News will be doing intros and is assisting producing. “Search” will air on KHON-2 Hawaii in July.

BITS AND PIECES . . . As our music contributor Jon Woodhouse pens on Page 4, Neil Young and his current band, Promise of the Real with Lukas and Micah Nelson, performed at Charley’s in Paia on Saturday in a statement to our environment. And according to Scene reader Richard Pechner, Young and his entourage traveled to West Maui to “Come Plant The Solution” event prior to Charley’s show. Volunteers planted sweet potatoes, taro, bananas and more than 100 coconut trees at Simpli-Fresh Farm in Lahaina and Young thrilled the group with a song from his upcoming album, “The Monsanto Years.” Actress Daryl Hannah was with Young at the farm gig.
Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop in Olowalu just launched its new chicken and waffles earlier this week and the combo plate is getting rave reviews . . . DUO at the Four Seasons Resort Maui also launched the sriracha-honey chicken and tarragon waffles in time for Restaurant Week Wailea that will run through Saturday night.
Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas Executive Chef Francois Milliet recently won the 2015 Maui County Farm Bureau’s Friends of Agriculture Aipono Award. So it’s no surprise that he’s launching the Farm-to-Fork series at the resort’s Ocean Pool Bar & Grill with locally infused dishes from Maui farms each Friday. The meal includes a salad followed by the chef inspired main entree for $32. Call 667-3259.
Hot on the heels of the film fest, Kapalua Wine & Food Festival will jump June 11 to 14 with celebrity chefs, winemakers and former sports pros who went into the wine biz. Star chef Michael Mina will now do a cooking demo with Master Sommelier Rob Bigelow and winemaker Dan Kosta of Kosta Browne at 1 p.m. on June 14. Also that same day Wine World of Sports with big-name athletes moves to 1 p.m.; and Elusive & Exclusive Napa Valley cabernet sauvignons will be at 3:30 p.m. For more details, visit www.kapaluawineandfoodfestival.com.
