The benefit kickoff for Make A Wish Hawaii foundation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Outlets of Maui mall in Lahaina, and will continue running Sundays through Sept. 6. Pi Artisan Pizzeria boasts a new menu and will do a brunch special, Hard Rock Cafe will offer happy hour all day, Harley Davidson will rev up with a bike show, and sidewalk sales will appeal to shoppers among us.
West Maui residents as well as visitors don’t have to head Upcountry to get the freshest Maui produce.
Bringing the island’s bounty right to Whalers Village shoppers, the Grown on Maui Farmers Market returns to the center on Saturday, as part of the first annual Maui Jim OceanFest; and on Sept. 5, as part of the Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival Ka’anapali.
Beyond just mangoes and papayas, the market will feature a rainbow of Maui produce, from dragonfruit to bok choy, Waipoli lettuce to Kula onions.
The oceanfront location near Hula Grill Ka’anapali and Maui Fish & Pasta will give browsers a chance to meet the farmers in an up-close-personal environment. Word has it Maui Fish & Pasta is offering 50 percent off of all food from 5 to 7 p.m. daily at the bar and veteran Executive Chef Alex Stanislaw rocks the menu. Hula Grill is celebrating 21 years on Friday, June 12, with a party of complimentary pupu and drinks available for purchase. All bar proceeds will benefit Feed My Sheep.
Plus, do check out Joey Macadangdang’s new eatery, Joey’s Kitchen, lower level of the mall. Try his short ribs sinegang (homegrown one-pot soup with a hint of tamarind), vegetable pancit and Bulgogi beef hoagie with Swiss cheese, kimchee and miso.
Honolulu Coffee, a premier Hawaii roaster and retailer, just opened in Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa’s lobby. It serves from Kona Peabury coffee to tropical smoothies to pastries daily from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Grapes of Summer will kick off the hot season from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Pulehu, An Italian Grill in the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas.
“Guests will enjoy a night of thoughtful food and wine pairings with music provided by a DJ and dancing next to the koi pond,” says Pulehu Manager and sommelier Jim Hansen. “The menu at this open-seating event will feature freshly prepared food at action stations, cheese as well as charcuterie, passed dishes and dessert. Wines will include selections from around the world.”
Tickets are required and are available for $75 per person. Hansen also hosts an informal wine tasting Sundays and Mondays for $20 per person with three light and refreshing summer wines and a light appetizer. For reservations, call 667-3200.

BITS AND PIECES . . . You don’t have to be born on the bayou to enjoy the varied food that will be served at the John Fogerty concert Saturday outdoors at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. Star Anise Indian Cuisine will entice with chicken and veggie curries with saffron rice and mixed greens, and samosas.
Three’s Bar & Grill will grill bacon-wrapped hot dogs and do kalua pork quesadillas, panko ahi rolls and hurricane french fries. Smoke & Spice will wow with brisket plates, pulled pork, jalapeno sausages (perfect with Fogerty’s swamp rock) with beans, potato salad, cole slaw and spicy barbecue sauce. Real Fruit Ice Cream Hawaii will sell cups and cones of their cool desserts.
Kula resident Arnie Koss and his twin, Ron Koss, have recently introduced a new ice cream for people who want a healthful treat. Brio can be found at Foodland, Sack N Save, Pukalani Superette, Haiku Grocery Store and Island Grocery Depot on Maui. The brothers co-founded Earth’s Best (organic) Baby Foods in the 1980s.
