AROUND THE TOWN . . Rumor has it that Skip Hildreth and brothers Ed Carson and Majic Carson have taken over Pukalani Club House and soon will refurbish it into what will be Aria’s on the Green. The Carsons own and operate Aria’s in Wailuku, voted Best New Restaurant on Maui in this year’s paper.

The inaugural Hula Grill Digs Farmers dinner will grow on you starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the beachfront Kaanapali restaurant.

“Enjoy a six-course meal prepared by Executive Chef Charlie Owen that showcases the best of what Maui has to offer,” explains Katie Say, Hula Grill’s community relations coordinator.

The farm-inspired meal will include select beer by Maui Brewing Co. and cocktails by Ocean Organic Vodka and Deep Island Rum. Held on the lawn next to the Barefoot Bar, it kicks off at 6 p.m. with live music by George Kahumoku Jr. and Daniel Ho.

Cost is $80 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Attendees get a recycled tote bag for future trips to the local farmers market. Call 667-6636. . . Speaking of farmers, the Hawaii Farmers Union United will host its statewide convention Friday through Sunday at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.

It’s recognized as a voice for local farmers, ranchers and fishermen. With chapters throughout Hawaii, HFUU will kick off festivities Friday with a reception and dinner at The Mill House by Chef Jeff Scheer.

The evening’s keynote speakers will be Hawaii State Sen. Mike Gabbard, chairman of Water, Land and Agriculture Committee; and his daughter, U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who represents Hawaii’s second Congressional District. There will be a poi pounding demo, organic coffee and tea and desserts from Pono Pies. You don’t have to be a farmer to attend. The Go Red for Women luncheon and health expo will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui in Wailea. Chef Tylun Pang will present three courses; and Jennifer Nguyen of A Saigon Cafe and Fairmont Pastry Chef Rick De Boer will do cooking demos.

A speech on Food Literacy Education: Why Our Future Depends on Understanding How Food Can Promote the Health of People and the Planet by Antonia Demas, Ph.D. in education, nutrition and anthropology at Cornell will be held at 7 p.m. today in the Cameron Center in Wailuku. The Maui Culinary and Hospitality Academies present Markets of the World @UHMC from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in Kahului.

It will be a tasting event inspired by open markets such as Tsukiji in Japan, Mercato Porta in Nolana, Italy; Mercado Municipal De Sao Paolo, Brazil; and Mellah Marrakech Spice Market in Morocco. I fondly remember eating sushi and sipping sake at Tsukiji at the ungodly hour of 6 a.m. one cold morning after viewing the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Auction, before we headed to the Sumo Stables to watch the big boys in action.
