MauiWine at Ulupalakua Ranch will usher in the holidays by lighting a 22-foot Monterey pine from the Kula Botanical Gardens from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free but you may bring a nonperishable food item to be donated to Maui Food Bank.
Gordean Bailey will do the blessing; halau Wehiwehi o Leilehua will perform hula; Derick Sebastian will play live music; Santa Claus will pose for pictures; the film “Elf” will screen; adults may sample sparkling toasts and tastes of Ulupalakua Estate-grown wines; and Chef Will Munder of the Ulupalakua Ranch Store will make comfort foods such as shepherd’s pies and bread pudding. Max’s of Manila at the Maui Mall in Kahului ran friends and family through last weekend for tastings and then held a soft opening earlier this week in the former Dragon Dragon location.
“Right now, we’re just open just for dinner and then will extend hours as days go on,” says owner Ernie Abarro, who has fashioned this franchise eatery after the legendary original in the Philippines.
“We’ll be making fried chicken that’s been a signature in Manila for 70 years along with Filiipino kare kare; lechon kawali; pinakbet; and of course, Max’s signature halo halo and buko pandan,” he says.
Duke’s Beach House in Kaanapali that pays tribute to legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku threw its sixth anniversary party on Friday with live entertainment by Henry Kapono (who plays there monthly), complimentary pupu and drawings for a longboard. All drink proceeds went to Princess Nahi’ena’ena school.
There’s a new teriyaki Whopper at Burger King, created especially for Hawaii. They hold the pickles and hold the ketchup in lieu of the local favorite sauce.
