AMOROUS EATS . . . Want to get in the mood for food? Then come to the new Oceanside Restaurant at the Maalaea Harbor Shops tonight for a tango class, followed by a chocolate feast that pays homage to cacao by chef Gary King with desserts by Mitzi Toro, the Maui Cookie Lady, and Desiree Parada of Madame Donut all made of locally sourced beans.
“Be sure to check out this new restaurant in Maalaea at the former Saltimbocca location,” says Fotis Tassopoulos of Better Brands, who dined there recently with fiance Karen Christenson of Mama’s Fish House. “Its young chef puts out absolutely delicious food at very reasonable prices. . . Plus it’s BYOB for now.”
Tucked away in Wailea, Matteo’s Osteria is one of those delightful hideaways that attracts people in the hotel industry and other savvy regulars.
Every Friday in February, the chefs will present a Taste of Tuscany five-course Italian feast and you may enjoy it with or without wines. Highlights are an antipasto plate with chicken pate, prosciutto, salame and pecorino cheese drizzled in honey. Then comes a classic Florence cannellini bean soup, followed by slow-braised duck served on housemade chestnut pappardelle pasta; pan-fried lamb chops with baked fennel; and almond-crust pie.
Next month, chef-owner Matteo Mistura will tour other areas of Italy. For now, it’s $70 per person and $60 more for wine pairings. Call 891-8466.

BITS AND PIECES . . . The next ‘Aipono Wine Dinner will kick off with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday at Ko in the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea. The fundraiser for Maui Culinary Academy costs $125 per person with $25 benefiting future chefs. Call 875-2210.
Mark your calendars for March 19, when the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea presents its annual fundraising dinner show, this year titled, Blue Hawaii. Starring Darren Lee as Elvis performing with his band, the show will be live at Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea.
