IN WEST MAUI . . . It was recently announced that Troon Golf Courses/TY Management is buying Pineapple Grill Restaurant at its Bay Course clubhouse location from David and Lesley Cohn of Cohn Restaurant Group on Maui and Southern California.
Pineapple Grill will remain open as ownership transitions in the following months. Staff will be retained and continue to provide the exceptional service and experience it is known for, according to a press release.
“It’s been a wonderful 11 years,” says Cohn, who will continue with Plantation House in Kapalua and his newest venture, the Castaway Cafe in Kaanapali, as well as seek more venues for expansion.
Meanwhile Taverna, just up Office Road from Pineapple Grill in the former Vino spot, is getting closer to opening. I popped in the other day and saw partners Chris Kaiwi and Greg Shepherd and construction crew. The walls are charred oak, just like wine barrels. There are 32 seats at the bar, and chairs are being shipped from China. Taverna will be open for dinner, happy hour and Sunday brunches. Chef Roger Stettler of Cow Pig Bun and formerly Four Seasons, is also a partner.
Also in the neighborhood, Montage Kapalua Bay resort is running with a promo for parents. Yes, you may actually have a date night or a spa day if you send your loving keiki to the Paintbox activities center.

Kohola Brewery opened behind Lahaina Center on Dec. 22 in the old Maui Brewing Co. location. “Kohola” means “humpback whale” in Hawaiian – and it’s got a beautiful 1,300-square-foot tasting room, 25-barrel system and seats for at least 40 people to do flights and pints. So far, Kohola has 17 keg accounts including Andaz Maui, Monkeypod Kitchen, Fat Daddy’s, Flatbread Co., Honu, Frida’s and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
“Because of that we have many people coming in to taste test the rest of our beers,” says Christine Elumba, whose husband, Ian Elumba, is chief beer officer. “We have nine at this time. Talk Story, Hana Road, 88 Light, Lokahi Pilsner are all very popular.”

BITS AND PIECES . . . There’s nothing like a cool martini mixed with some smooth jazz. That’s just what the King Kamehameha Golf Club is presenting starting at 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays in Waikapu with Martinis and Jazz Night.
Cost of $25 includes light pupu from 7 to 8:30 p.m. of a rotating menu, music by Phil Smith and the Gentlemen of Jazz, and dancing. You pay at the cash bar for martinis with Pau Vodka made by Hali’imaile Distillers, Hendricks Gin or Jack Daniels.
Choose from the classic, shaken not stirred, the Gibson or the Waikapu gimlet among others. On Tuesday, IHOP at Maui Mall will celebrate National Pancake Day. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each diner who donates to Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Shriners Hospital for Children or other charities gets a free short stack. It’s a voluntary donation, of course.
Bring your appetites to the Santana concert Saturday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Gates open at 4 p.m. for food and drinks. Three’s Bar & Grill will do ground-turkey lettuce wraps, wok-fried Brussels sprouts and Upcountry kale salad; Brigit & Bernard’s will do chicken Marsala, Hungarian goulash and meat loaf plates; Teddy’s Bigger Burgers will grill beefy wonders; Like Poke? will do ahi katsu and poke bowls; Maui Tacos will transport your taste buds to Mexico with roast pork pastor or shredded chicken chipotle burritos; and desserts will be plentiful from Donut Dynamite and Shaka Pops.
